  • Help with settings for a Zoom 505ii.

Hey everybody. I am asking for some help with my Zoom 505ii MFX pedal.

I'm looking to create a Iron Maiden tone on it but have not been sucessful. It either comes out too muddy or it just sounds crap.

If anyone can help me with a patch setting or pointers in the correct direction it will be appreciated.

Thanx ?
    Hi there

I used to gig with my Zoom pedal but it is sadly a very muddy thing when it comes to distortion tones. I used it for reverb and tuning and had my metal zone handling the heavy bits.

    Try one of these perhaps?

A search for Iron Maiden yielded 2 results, hope they work ok ?
Also, the same patch may sound totally different on different guitars. A lot of the tone comes from the pickups. So if your pickup is muddy, you may need to roll back on the bass and hope it helps, for instance. Neck pickups tend to more muddy.

And now we wait for the GAS to kick in. ?

      Hope you find your tone.

EDIT: If you want metal tone: Get a tube amp, stick an overdrive pedal like a TS808 in front of it for a boost, and get a thick plectrum to really dig into those strings. I might be wrong on this, but it worked for me.
One thing that frustrated me about pedals that model amps is that I never knew how to approach dialing in a sound. I reckon start with a amp model that is as close to the amp as the player's actual one and work through setting up the rest of the patch around that. Save a few iterations with different eq settings and see which one works best with your guitar(s).

For Dave Murray, it's a Marshall (JCM) with a Tube Screamer for boost/lead, occasionally with a uni-vibe thrown in and a wah. Sure you can find his amp settings (bass/mids/treble/presence) somewhere...

One thing to experiment with : modelling pedals generally sound better run through a full range speaker (E.g. not a guitar amp). Something like an acoustic amp, keyboard amp, powered speaker - you get the idea. Guitar amps usually have speakers voiced for guitar and the modelling pedals just don't seem to get the tones through that you'd hope for. Run a mp3 through a guitar amp and then a acoustic amp and you should hear the difference I'm talking about.

I run a little ibby acoustic amp for the modelling stuff and it sounds that much better than a guitar amp.
