Basically, what you need to do, download an amp simulation VST (Le Pou for instance). If it comes with speaker simulation then you're good to go else get Redwirez's free version. There's more instructions on their site about how to get it to work. Then download Reaper, if you have a mac, then Garageband will work, that's what I use. Then load everything into reaper, tell reaper to use your cable as input and the system default as output and switch on monitoring.
+1, Reaper is gold and not to hard to figure out. If I remember correctly, Reaper has some kind of wizard to help you set up your audio devices. It also has a built in guitar amp, but that's not very good. there is also a plug in called /
