Yep. So this is what happened. I tilted the amp like ez suggested - amazing the difference (I might have some hearing loss now). Then I turned the amp's tone completely open - it was half way. Turned the volume three quarters of the way.
Then I controlled the tone with the guiatr only and because I am a very heavy handed strummer (all that metal playing), I just focused on playing softly. So now it goes from sparkly clean do crunch at the movement of my strumming hand.
Moral of the story, do not try and play a tube amp at "decent" volumes. It likes to be turned past 6(three quarters of the way) to sound decent on the clean channel. Well, this one does. And then reduce the volume using the guitar volume and soft playing. And don't go buy more shit and upgrade other shit if you can't play properly yet - the problem most probably lies with you. :?
And it is/was probably a case of GAS.
Well, thank you everyone for your inputs. It is always an informative and learning experience.
A soundclip recorded with my cellphone: The first part is on the neck humbucker and the second part is on the middle single coil. Please excuse all the playing mistakes and timing issues.
That's good going. We give in to GAS way too often (I'm a massive culprit) and mostly it is just because we hear things differently on different days and then we start lusting over that other thing.
Your playing is coming along nicely, keep it up. Don't hurt your ears, the amp is much louder when you're facing the speaker, and the HT5 is loud enough to damage your hearing. You can get a more sparkly sound by using a very hard pick too, I use those red Dunlop Jazz III picks for this reason, makes a nice sharp attack sound which makes the guitars sound a bit brighter. They are quite small though and they don't bend, takes some getting used to.
