Hi guys.
With load shedding not going away soon the dangers - real or imagined - has become a burning issue between musos and venues. Have been asked to play a gig tonight on generator power. Probably the usual cheapo generator small pubs buy to run lights and fridges. No chance of inverters etc.
I have read so much conflicting advice on the net. Anybody have a firm view on whether I risk damaging my PA and equipment (particularly laptop, digital effects units, speakers and power amp) in the short or medium term to unregulated AC power spikes and drops?

You also risk death. Not everyone understands how to earth equipment properly. Also, some music venues disconnect the earth connections on some of their power outlets to stop the sound equipment from humming.
This is doubly important if there is more than one generator. In that case, don't unpack your gear, just go home and read a book.
