Here is the challengers for this month. I summed them all in the same group, despite their preferences for which category as I thought they all gifted entrants and deserve to compete on the same battle ground.

We can try something new this month - I'm identifying the entrants (science experiment), so they can feel free to comment without reservation.

    Yay! Get your vote on.!

I've a new edit for mine - mostly trimmed the fat, but we'll go with what we got.

Just finished the "Intro to Ableton" 3 weeks - nice quick overview - filled in a few gaps. Tried to do the music production one as well, but I ran outta of time to do both concurrently.

I'm only getting a few seconds for mixerboy and studmissile? V8 plays fine.

        Hmmm anyone else getting this?

Same here, I havn't tried downloading them yet.
Bleak I didn't submit, if I had 45 seconds to record myself tuning my guitar I would have submitted that!

              Excellent entries from everyone.

              Mixerboy:

Add a bit of synth and Taylor Swift vocals and you have a hit there. Fantastic production as always which always does influence my voting somewhat.

              V8:

To me this started like a Michael Jackson track and morphed into The Prodigy/Fatboy Slim. Very nice.

              studmissile

Bonus points for vocals. I felt this didn't nail the brief as much as the other two entries did. However, it could pass for the Arctic Monkeys on a blues/southern rock trip. The brief aside, really enjoyed the track for what it is.

Will have to sleep on this one before casting my vote.

Andrian, I prefer the entrants being named.

Yeah same here! Made me more curious to check the entries out.

Rest of the time I'm just lazy and coz I don't recognise the names, often skip some tracks or all of them ?
                  casted my vote ?

as always guys, the quality of the entries is really great ? . what's also nice is the diversity shown up between them.
Shuck ou's you are really not making it easy. I voted. The songs were great but no 1 really inspired me.
V8: Addictive Drums ? (I never liked it, always had that "Addictive Drums" sound to it), this sounded like some crazy kids cartoon music to me, funky kids on acid ?

Studmissile: This sounded more like southern rock/blues. Mix wise it sounds all mono, you should pan stuff out, like guitars full left and full right etc (unless you did and just bounced it mono)

Bounced, Pan??? I picked up a second hand micro on the friday before the monday deadline. I'm still trying to figure out how to adjust the volume!!

As for you guys, loved them both, too hard to choose, so I voted myself! ? , well done all around!

Sorry mixerboy, I've got a quick question, do you pan (whatever channel/instrument) full left or right, or maybe say just 50% - 80%?

also drums, would you stereo those too?
                            Great entries guys!
For me Bream V8 was closest to the brief - now where is Nicki :?

I'm pretty much into LCR panning, more like Full left, 50% left, Centre, 50% right and full right so not true LCR but nothing other than that, nothing gets panned 75 to the left or 34 to the right or anything, keeps it simple and avoids phase issues between the speakers.

There are a few schools of thought on panning. Some guys always stick to either 50% L/R, 100% L/R or straight down the middle.

For panning drums, its best to try pan things as they would be when recorded (and also how it would sound when listening to a live drummer). For example,

                                  Overheads L 100%L
                                  Overheads R 100%R
                                  Ride 25-50%L
                                  HH 25-50%R
                                  Kick C
                                  Snare C
                                  Floor Tom 50% L
                                  Middle Tom C

                                  (Copied from this thread: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/f-o-h/352800-panning-drums.html)

Bass guitar should generally be down the center, and if you double track your guitars, you'll want to pan one hard left and the other hard right.

Panning comes down to feel and creating spatial awareness for the listener. A 'wider' mix often sounds bigger whereas a 'narrow', mono mix will often feel small and claustrophobic.
