Dear fellow sufferers
after years of playing with a band, we want to down-scale to a two person group. we have guitar, amp, mixer, speaker, guitar effects pedal, speakers, keyboard. what else is recommended ? (loop machine, midi setup etc)

I guess you'll figure out what you need as you go along... I could suggest millions of items of gear, but that would be based on my personal preference.
Don't know what your looping requirements are, but you generally can't go too wrong with an RC3 loop station.
What do you want to do with midi? If it's just triggering from a laptop you could just use any of the Novation or M-Audio range of midi keyboards or pad controllers.

While in Asia the other day I saw a small band do a Coyote Ugly act that intrigued me. Pop soungs sounding remarkably like their original whether the band were playing or not - but still with the band members able to play and be heard. It all seemed to eminate from a laptop yet did not sound like a backing track at all... That you must have.
