I've been listening to a lot of demos and have narrowed it down to the Maxon OD808 (versatile), Ibanez TS9 (classic), and Digitech Bad Monkey (good price). Are there others i should be looking at? :-\ What are your guy's experiences?

It's to drive a Peavey 6505, for thrash and djent tones.

Maybe someone has something lying around they can sell me ?
Any tubescreamer type pedal will work well, but they also add their own warmth and tone. If you want something to just push and tighten the amp(with no added other stuff) I would look at something like a boss blues driver, or even a clean boost. Depends on what you want. All should give very decent tones with a peavey 6505.

I have a tubescreamer clone and a blues driver ?
      Metalzone! hehe... kidding...

But it really depends on how you have your amp set, and what pickups you have in your guitar... Tubescreamer is a go to pedal. But ultimately it would be great if you could go test out some pedals with your gear.

When I bought my current guitar I took my amp and pedals to the dudes house to test out... LOL!
You'll want to get your drive from your amp itself, and not a pedal. The 6505 will provide more than sufficient gain without it being necessary to rely on a stompbox.

Just throw in a TS9 or Maxon OD808 before the amp and use it as a boost (i.e. using very little to no gain out of the pedal itself, adjust tone and volume to taste).

This will just give the amp that added bite, focus and clarity without muddying up your tone.
Yes I wasn't planning on turning the gain past 0, just purely for the boost.
I use high-output passive pups in my guitars, but yes trying them out with my gear is the best option.

I missed out on a Tubescreamer last week, but I think it might be a bit lacking in lower-mid range power. There's a Bad Monkey going but judging from sound clips it sounds a bit 'cheap'. Can't seem to find the OD808 anywhere.

I found with amp sims that a Rat can sound good as a boost too. Anyone dig the Rat?

I seem to have found myself on a mission to re-create the rigs that I have created in virtual amp sims, but with real hardware. I don't know if things will turn out the same though!

I can't seem to find any decent demos of this..

An old school friend, Richard Harriman, has offered to build me a Maxon OD808 copy! I will probably be taking up that offer.
I used to have one of those Overlord's and regret ever selling it - it's monster, built like a tank and sounds great
