I'm looking to buy a decent voice over mic. I'm a motion graphics guy who is doing a lot of adverts at the moment. We have studios, but, they're always busy, so want to get a decent voice over mic to do simple 30 second clips.
BUT, I was also wondering, is there a mic that'd do voice overs well and then double up and record acoustic fairly well? Or are they completely different mics? I'm really clueless when it comes to microphones. Any sites I can read up about different mics and uses (that aren't just trying to sell me everything)?
I have a Sennheiser MKH-60 which I've used mainly for when I film stuff. Never tried it for voice overs, because most videos I've seen of people doing voice overs don't use shotgun mics. But maybe that could work?

Nothing wrong with the Sennheiser MKH-60 for VO work. Being a directional/short shotgun mic, make sure that you stay within it's active area. I.e. keep your head still.
The best thing to do though is to try it out and compare it with recordings of other mics.
I have used a Sennheiser e835 dynamic mic for some some time now for VO... radio/TV broadcast as well as corporate work. I use it on stage for singing and have also used it to mic up my acoustic guitar when recording. It's pop sensitive on close mic work so I use a pop sock and or a pop filter/screen.

Great, thanks so much Pete.
I also have the trusted Sure SM58. Actually tried to use that last night, but the sound came out so soft and boomy/bassy (not sure what it is even called). I got something useable after some EQing and compressor. But would like something a little nicer. I will try the sennheiser tonight.
Thanks Pete.

Most studios would use a Shure SM7B for VO work, but I don't know how that would perform on an acoustic?
Depending on your budget though, I would look at a Tul f47. It's based around the Neumann U47, but rediculusly cheaper at around the R9k mark. That will give you the full bodied sound that VO work usually requires, but being a condenser mic, will work wonders on your acoustic, and can be used on just about anything else. And even better, its made right here in Cape Town, so you'd be supporting local. ?
Hope that helps?

G!
