Scott"Demalienzmaan" http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Scott.mp3

Blurb: My idea with this piece is like a huge city that has been invaded by aliens, and the humans are scurrying about, trying to survive and running for their lives.

Gear: used two guitars for this, inadvertently. The powerchords in the song were recorded with the Squier, while the melodic pieces were played on an Ibanez. I found the humbucker on its bridge to work better for it in this case. I recorded straight into my soundcard and did the primary construction of the track in FL Studio, but did final mixing in Audacity 1.3 Beta. The amp I use is a Peavey Vypyr 75, and for the melodic parts I used the overdrive setting on the Rectifier amp model, slightly boosted with a Bad Monkey tube overdrive pedal, and had a heavy phaser effect for wackiness

Dale"Manifest Infestation" http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Dale.mp3

I did a bit of a rushed job on this one. Ran out of time at the mixing stage, so this is highly over-processed as I probably hit the compressors and limiters too hard in my haste!

I used a number of royalty free and public domain samples, including voice recordings of the Apollo missions.

Scott : I reckon you were spot on to your blurb, could imagine the puny humans scurrying around for their lives. Felt a bit long, but would really work well in a cinematic montage of the invasion. Good stuff!

Dale : f**king brilliant. I could listen to this all day long. Intro, buildup and release with the guitars...yeeeaahhh man! Only (minor) crit is when the guitars kick in,that things do get a bit busy/mushy? but that's only briefly. Properly alien invasion chaos - both thumbs up!
      Scott:

This was reminiscent of Jeff Wayne's musical War of the Worlds, and could quite easily have been used in the original Star Trek TV series. For purposes of casting my vote however, I will base my vote only on the first 2 minutes as that is all you're allowed in this comp. Pity, as there was some good stuff in the last 2 and a bit minutes.

I know we flout the rules a lot in these comps, but the 2 minute limit to me is crucial.

I liked the eerie and other-worldly guitar tone. You performed the brief well insofar as your description is concerned ?

      Dale:

I liked the heavy riffs and the sense of impending doom and destruction they created, but other than the astronaut voice overs, the actual composition and guitar parts of the entry seemed a bit divorced from the sci-fi feel that built up in the first 30 seconds.

While Scott's entry was War of the Worlds, I'd say yours was more Alien vs Predator.

All in all, both good entries that will require thought before casting my vote!

Have to agree with previous post regarding length?

        Dale
Liked this one - if I had to criticize anything I would have preferred that the voice samples were only played over the choruses, for example.

As always the recording abilities of those in this category are fantastic (rushed job or not)

Took a little long to get going but get going it did... The initial riff made me think of sirens (police/ambulance). Guitar tone was cool pretty scifi.

          Dale
I liked this entry... It's like a fusion between duke nukem and star craft theme or something.
