  • All chords are scales and all Scales are chords?

'Chord tones' and 'extended chords' are a more useful approach than 'scales'- even if they amount to the same notes. I read some theory tips by Carol Kaye when I was first learning to play that talk about this approach. The nice thing about chord tones is that understanding the chord you need are working with, rather than thinking about a scale, gives you clues about which notes you can emphasise, which passing notes you can get away with, and which you need to avoid.
yes thats the jazz approach ...treat each chord on it's own .... you can then play the chord tones and any harmony notes to the chord tones and any extensions (13's /b5's etc ) can be used so enhance the solo ...we call it "playing the changes" i teach this method to my students and to great result even used in rock and pop ...

it does however mean one must understand a bit more theory , chord construction and harmony ...but it gets even more interesting when you apply substitutions like playing a diminished run a s/t higher than the root over a dominant chord ...and so on and so on ....

but yes i play this way all the time...

      Thanks my man +1!!
This is really cool - I never realized that the chord extensions were simply the notes in the related scale!!
All has been revealed and it does seem so obvious :-[
