I have a Denon mini system at home. It will play media on a USB stick and will play MP3 off of discs. So I assume the CD part of the system is not a straight audio CD player.
In my car I have a Pioneer unit that plays all sorts of stuff on disc or via USB.
Twice recently I have got a new CD (both from the UK) that will play in the car but not in the Denon system. Generally the Denon works well, and I shrugged off the first no-play incident. But now there's a second do that makes an oke scheme hey?
This morning I tried the last few physical CDs I bought. All play on the Denon except the two that got me scheming. Both play ok in the car. Both play ok in my DVD player. Both can be ripped on a PC.
So
1) anybody seen anything like this before?
2) clearly all CDs are not created equal
3) I suppose the Denon could be packing in but it's not very old and doesn't have a lot of miles on the clock.
Any suggestions ?

I've seen it a few times. Obviously there are those older CD players that won't play burned CDs or mixed media CDs, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.
The truth is nobody knows - sometimes a particular CD will refuse to play on a particular player. A few of the CD pressing plants are investigating, but no-one has any answers yet. The CD pressing services will exchange any time they get this complaint because of this, but rarely find any problems with the returned CDs.
Sometimes a thorough lens clean helps, sometimes a service, but that doesn't cure every problem case. Often a replacement CD from the very same batch will play fine too.
Then again, fussiness over certain CDs is sometimes an early warning that a player is on its way South...
