  • My bands first song -rock/funk- feedback appreciated

Hey guys,

my band finally released a song. Please have a listen and give me some feedback ?
We recorded it ourselves and Dylan Ellis mixed and mastered it. Check him out, he's really good.
I actually attempted to mix it myself first. i'll also post the link to that so you guys can hear the same song with the same material, just mixed by an amateur and a professional. it's really interesting.

    very cool Lethe!
Awesome song ? ...keen to hear the original mix for comparison too ?
Very good indeed. Wonderful groove (wouldn't really call it funk though - More tight groove-rock).

Drums are a bit flat and too centred (are they mono?) - try spread the toms and especially the cymbals wider. Some stuff has to be right up the middle (kick, bass vox), so move as much as you can away from there. Even pushing your hats and snare off the centre by 5% or so creates a bigger space and clarifies the mix. Crash and ride cymbals tend to pad things out by their very nature, so move em right out of the clutter.

I'd probably want to accent the groove as much as possible. To that end, go drier generally (less room mic on the kit, more direct) and bring down the level of the lead guitar during the vocal and groove bits to prevent it padding out the production.

Rhythm guitars are just a touch too loud for me too.

        All very much IMO... ?
I can't help but feel the whole song would have been better with less drive on the guitars, more "clean" yet still rock.

            Blasphemy!!! LOL!!!

But yes... sometimes a little cleaner is better. When I first recorded my guitar straight into the PC I liked how it was sounding until I played it back... I had to use a little less drive and then it sound much better (to me).
Might just be a mix thing, sounds a bit like everything is fighting frequency wise so for me the first thing that gets it is usually those damn guitars.

My thinking too, otherwise sounds good.
Thanks for the response guys. The song started out with most guitars being just slightly overdriven. I decided to make them 'heavier' as I felt it sounded fuller.
If you want you can share the tracks so we can have a go mixing it as well?
                      5 days later
Very cool ? I dig it, . . . I'll leave the nit-picking to the guys that know more ?
