Hey everyone.
I have an old custom build amp here on my desk that Craig Cannon brought me to have a look at as there is no sound. At first glance you will realise it's a real point to point - no turret point to point - component to component wiring. This seemed interesting enough, but what really through me was what looked like the build being a push pull setup with 1 x 12ax7, 2 x EL84's and an EZ81 rectifier. The wiring didn't make sense as it didn't look like there was a PI anywhere to be found.
After chatting with Benj from Craig Amps for a while and looking again at the wiring I realised that it couldn't be possible for these to be EL84's in there as nothing matched up with the Grid, Plate and Screens. I went on the hunt for this Valve but couldn't find it and it still bugged me that this thing didn't have a PI
Spoke to Benj again and told him the wiring layout. The words he said next just made everything about this amp fall into place for me. He said: It sounds like it could be ECL82 valves which is a triode and pentode in on little glass bottle. ??? ??? ??? This was my face for a while. TRIODE AND PENTODE IN ONE BOTTLE. Now I need to ask if anyone here in the Western Cape has a set of ECL82's that Mr Cannon and I can use to test on the amp so we can be sure if it's that?

ECL82 aren't the only valves that are like that. I have a (not yet fixed) Marshall model 1930 that uses ECL86s that also contains a pentode and triode in one bottle. This shouldn't be that weird seeing that the 12AX7 contains two triodes in the same bottle. Still, pretty cool ?

I quickly realised that those aren't the only ones like that, but the wiring in this one is definitely the same as the ECL82. though. I always wondered if something like this existed but never looked to see if they existed and now I know. hehe ?
