My BvanS Striatus

Chabenda · 2014-06-19T13:26:06+00:00

On my last trip to SA I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and staying with Neon Gecko. What an incredibly talented guy! After looking at the instruments that they have in stock, I decided to get a Striatus made for myself to my specifications. Neon Gecko has been working on some 3D pictures and these are the first. The build kicks off at the end of this month! I'm excited! Pick ups are BvanS neck single and a Seymour Duncan Vintage bridge. I also want the old style three saddle bridge.

Ok, Fellow Pluckers, here we are with the next installment. After a technical hitch with a broken router bit Neon Gecko and his reptiles-in-crime have managed to make some good progress on the top and the neck, here is the f hole and some more neck detail. Woooo hooo! :woohoo:

Look at that grain!

Looking good. ?

Mr Gecko has been under the radar recently because I asked him if he would consider doing an inlay on my fret board and he bravely got stuck in.

My nickname 'Chabenda' was given to me by some local residents when I lived at Cahora Bassa. It is part of a bastardised Shona saying that means something like 'a snake can move sideways and forwards but has no reverse'. I don't know if it was a intended to be a compliment or a curse. Anyway, I asked Senhor Gecko if he could put a snake on the twelfth fret and he has kindly obliged. I am extremely grateful and very happy with the result. I think that it will really look good once the clear coat has been added.

All the bits and pieces laid out

The work begins

No longer having to hold his breath any longer, Senhor Gecko can now get stuck into some energy drinks and get the shakes!

Thank you Neon Gecko!!

I like it!

Well, the weather's not playing ball as far as sealing and painting goes. Anyway, the bridge arrived by post and so the pickup cavities could be measured and routed. 8)

Mmmm... Progress ?

Chabenda

The bees have been buzzing and there's been some stingin' going on! Mr. Gecko has been full of the joys of spring (and paint fumes)!!

Here is a shot of the back of the neck - nearly done, shaping up nicely!

And then, just to make sure that it's all nice and straight, laser alignment! That wood is beginning to look really pretty!

The jack plate is going to be recessed into the body, nice and flush

Then a coat of pore sealer for the back

and then the front -

She is really beginning to look beautiful! ?

I just can't stop staring!

nice.... duder

Neon Gecko had some time on his hands and decided to put a signature on the back of the head stock. Initially he had intended using a Dremel but after having made up the chisels to do the neck inlay, decided to use those instead. The engraved groove was filled with a mixture of Rosewood sawdust and super glue. The result is very nice indeed (especially if you're name is Chabenda!)

Coming along nicely hey 8)

This is looking great- I'd be torn between the blueburst and leaving it natural.

Oooooh, she is taking on shape now. Looking good! :applause:

One question, why the recess on the back for the ferrules?

I noticed that too. Probably for a ferrule block/Tone Bar instead of ferrules, like this:
