Hi guys I would like to get some opinions from you guys. i'm looking at buying some monitors for my studio. I'm taking the studio stuff pretty serious and i'm expanding quite rapidly. By january i'd like to have a pretty impressive setup. I'm studying production full time and i'd prefer to buy monitors that would keep me happy for a few years.
My options are:
KRK vxt4 pair + KRK 10 sub or KRK Rokkit 8 pair.
I'll be mixing bands of pretty much all genres and i'm a bit of a drum & bass/ dubstep fan.
The vxt4s and sub will cost me more but if it's a setup that will keep me happy longer I don't mind paying a extra.

Seems like a Yamaha MSP5 pair would also be a option

You'll be wanting the sub for DnB. The VXT range is also far better than the Rokit and if you've got a sub, the VXT4s will do the job. KRK are generally pretty good with bass content.

Thanks for the response Alan.
So i was a little slow on the vxt4s ☹ they were sold yesterday. :'(
So now it's between the Yamaha msp5a pair or the Rokkit 8s. If I get the MSP5a i'd be able to still afford the KRK sub. I'm only familiar with the Yamaha HS series so if anyone tell me how the msp series compared it would be great.

I'm with Alan in that the VXT's are generally far superior to the Rokkits. My only concern would be integration. Having a separate sub can cause issues within the cross over point between where the sub overtakes and the VXT 4's bow out. This may be worsened by sub positioning and room shape/type. There are plenty of calibration softwares out there, so you should be able to sort this, but just be aware that you may get certain frequencies cut or boosted unnecessarily around that crossover point.
I'm also not a fan of small speakers at high volumes. If you plan to play your mixes at high volumes then there can be some short comings in the accuracy of the image. Small speakers are designed to sound great at low volumes and close quarters monitoring. I use Event Alp 5 monitors which are 5" speakers, and they sound fantastic even without a sub, but only at close quarters at relatively low volume. I have a second set of speakers connected to a decent quality hifi amp for louder monitoring, so I use the ALP5's as accurate detailers, and then the Monitor Audio RS2's through a Pioneer amp to check my mix's at higher volumes.
Hope that helps?
If your budget can stretch to it, take a look at the Yamaha's as well, or perhaps a pair of VXT6's.

The rokkit 8's look badass and impress you with big sound, but i recommend against them, as the bass is pretty huge and you will have trouble mixing/ getting low end right especially in a small room.
What are the dimensions of your room?
what is your budget more in less in Zuid Afrikaansche Rands?

I'm pretty much going on monitors I saw in pawnshops and classifieds. My budget would be around R5k (max R6k) room dimensions is pretty irrelevant at the moment since i'll be moving to a new place in January so I can have a dedicated room for my studio.
So no comments on the Yamaha MSP5a? MercuryMusic.co.za has a second hand pair of the old Krk v4s which I could get and combine with the sub but they are asking a bit much for em. Big G, i'll do some research over the calibration software. didn't really think of that.
Cash Converters menlyn had this vxt4s for R3 500 so i'm really disappointed that they got away.

Another option for you to consider is the Alesis Monitor 1 mk.2 Actives (not the M1 actives). They can be got for around R5500 and to my ears are the most accurate for the money. The HS80's are probably better, but cost nearly twice as much.
I am also considering parting with my Event ALP5 5" monitors, which I have found to be excellent near field monitors for mixing at a desk, though they are not designed to fill a room. Ideally I would keep these and replace the Monitor Audio's I have, but costs mean I'd have to shift these to afford their replacements. Let me know if they'd interest you, and we can make a plan?

Thanks for all the help guys!! I picked up a pair of Krk V4 monitors made in california and then I also got the KRK 10s sub. It sounds pretty killer even though my monitor placement and the calibration still needs to get sorted.
I ordered a Mackie Onyx 1620i desk today so i'll post some photos of my full setup once it's here and my acoustic panels are installed.
Appreciate the help and comments ?
