Some background...
So for a while, i have been using MTN's uncapped broadband lite service.
This doesnt exist anymore, but i was/am paying R300 a month for this service, which i dont think is unreasonable.
This has a soft cap on 3GB, and then throttles the speed, but i can still download quite a bit.
I also have a dual sim option, so also have a sim in my ipad mini which allows data on the go of course.
However, my contract has now expired and its now on a month to month basis.
But i dont trust MTN as far as i can see them, and can see i might end up with shit.
Now, i am trying to get my head around ADSL.
Im thinking, most of my browsing / downloading is done here at home, so why not get a better service.
So, if i understand correctly, i need 3 things to get the ball rolling:
A Telkom line,
an ADSL line,
data through a service provider.
Am i correct?
Then, what are your opinions on Web africa?
Im looking at their 40GB home capped package, which i understand doesnt get shaped or throttled in any way, unlike uncapped packages.
Also, it has 40GB free at night, and is only R149pm.
Plus if i take a 2MB ADSL line through them, it only costs R150pm.
What else should i be looking at?
any other advice?
just as an aside.. I dont use more than 40GB with my ipad and computer combined, and the web africa comes with 80GB, so i think thats a good package. plus, i would rather get that than the 15+15GB package then realise its not enough and have to buy more data!
Cheers,

I recommend you go MWEB. I just recently got my internet line installed. There are a lot of hidden costs which are not made obvious.
So the 3 costs are:
1. Phone rental (usually R160 p/m)
2. Adsl line rental (price varies on speed)
3. Cap/data package.
But mweb has a package where you can pay for the data and the line speed through them - it works out much cheaper. So I for example have the 2mb line uncapped. That means I pay just under R500 a month, plus they give you a free router, and those things go for around R700 easily.
If you get any data package that is 40Gb or more, than it won't be worth your while as the costs will be the same as the mweb uncapped costs. Afrihost also has a good deal, but again, mweb works out to be the cheapest. And I must commend their customer support. Its been excellent thus far

My main reason for rather wanting capped instead of uncapped is that uncapped is given lower priority, whereas capped is given higher priority!
Plus, i already have my own WiFi router, that uses my current MTN data stick!
But thanks for the MWEB suggestion, i will check them out too ?

Mweb all the way. Don't have my line here, bad in midrand as opposed to PTA, miss my 4meg line, I used to download about 300gb per month at least.

I've been very happy with the service from WebAfrica.
They are seriously on the ball with customer service 24/7.
I've got a 10Mb line & 4Mb package.
Currently sync'ing at 6Mb.
I deal with them on all things online.
When my phone line isn't working I message them; and they sort out Telkom.
Yay. No more interactions with Telkom. Yay.
I have no idea what other packages or service providers are like.

+1 for Adrian's comments. I've recently swopped over from Axxess to Mweb. Only for the value that Mweb are offering with their 2mb line - all in (telkom land line + mweb line rental & uncapped data) it's < R500/mth, which was about R70 less than a 1mb through Axxess.
I'm happy with Mweb, tech support is good and having a 3rd party follow up and escalate issues with Telkom is something you want. I've had a intermittent issue last two weeks and Mweb were really good at chasing Telkom and keeping in touch with me.
The router included is functional and comes with a range extender - useful to have a spare router for troubleshooting, alas the range extender is locked to only that specific router and has withstood my attempts at manual user configuration :'(
The only negativity to Mweb I've seen so far is for heavy 24/7 downloaders (not me... ?) - they will softcap you for a little while when you hit a threshold, fortunately this isn't for too long (a couple days) and you'll get full bandwidth again. I feel that Axxess/WebAfrica/etc... could be a better bet if you were a heavy downloader, they seem to have a higher threshold before you hit their softcap.

hey Norman, just double check your router as it sounds like you have a 3G router. You gonna need an adsl one, although its possible it could be both. Just keep it in mind.

Thanks so far guys.
Shaun, i have a router that has usb stick functionality that is really intended for fail over, but i use it as my primary ?
