Sweet. Is it standard procedure to add the frets to the fretboard before it is attached to the neck and the neck to the guitar?
I would not have guessed before I started researching this build, but all the LP builds I looked at do it this way. The binding is also added before the FB is stuck to the neck. The binding and the edges of the frets are bevelled at about 35deg from square. I should imagine that is easier to do with the FB unattached, as was cleaning up the flush cut frets on the table sander etc.
So, I'm no expert but the builds I have looked at have all done it that way. If you have seen other methods, I would really be interested in looking.
Because I am doing all of thisfor the first time, I will definitely change some methods if I do it over.
RE this FB - Its an integral part of LP, but if I were to redesign it, I would not use these large inlays & might well prefer an unbound board.
Anyway, I've almost finished the binding. It still needs the bevel added. I need small jig for that. I attached the binding with acetone & taped it up thoroughly, very thoroughly - beginners style. Clear overkill. I wasn't going to die wondering.
The binding is intentionally wider than the FB, so needs some carefull scraping.
"Nibs" must be left over the sides of the fret ends, like this:
Done. The bevelling will clean it up. A bit of FB cream will be used later to clean up marks from the damp cloth when fretting & mild acetone stains. Unexpectedly, the tannins did run a bit. I'll need to be a little more careful with the rest:
