Hey Gang, all the best for 2014!

I've been after a set of studio monitors for some time now, managed to get together a bit of dough and just looking for the right deal now. my Max budget is 3K, not a lot I know but there are couple brands 5inch monitors available here and there for just a tad over that price.

from time to time I see a set of used 6inch monitors coming up for sale on gumtree etc for round about 3k, like the KRK rokit 6's.

so in other words if I buy new, I get 5inch, if I buy used I can maybe pick up 6inch for the same price or even a bit less.

now for questions:

1. how much of a gamble is it to buy used monitors, is there much that can go wrong with them?
2. do I really need 6inch monitors instead of 5, my little room where they will be used is only 2m X 2m?

Thanx in advance!

They are electronic and electromechanical devices, so yeah, they sometimes go wrong (My KRK V8s had a bad tweeter right out the box). I wouldn't buy without testing that they work (and work well - no distortion, no crackles, no loose sockets). Failing the chance to audition them, I'd probably only buy from someone I knew or a store, so there was recourse.

Not really, a square room that size is going to have severe modal problems in the low end anyway, so the higher cutoff point of a smaller speaker will work to your benefit (and I'd still recommend you bass trap every corner possible).

Take a listen to the M-Audio BX5s, it's what I have. If I remember correctly, they cost me about R3200 or so?? about a year and a half ago. I have been very pleased with them.
