FatBoy Am I right in guessing that the vertical lines is still strips of masking tape and you haven't done the matt circles yet?
Spyke Correct, those lines are the masking tape. I've sprayed it satin black, where the tape is will be gloss black and the thin lines around the gloss will be natural wood colour. I suck at spraying and fear i may have pooched this job already. Satin black reveals all the tiny imperfections, showcasing my preparation of the surface, or rather, the lack thereof. I can see myself sanding this back down and redoing the spray job or employing a dinkum spray painter to do the job.
AlanRatcliffe Spyke wrote Satin black reveals all the tiny imperfections, showcasing my preparation of the surface, or rather, the lack thereof. Bingo! Wood prep is far more important than any other step and black is the most revealing colour.
Spyke It's not a bad thing as such if it shows the grain of the wood through the black, but sanding lines are not on. Contemplating primering the rings before spraying them.
AlanRatcliffe There is no substitute for wood prep - especially with a multilayered finish such as this. It lets you lay down very thin colour coats. For a number of reasons it's bad to go for multiple layers of sealer (primer - although a primer is used for metals). Sealer is formulated to fill small imperfections, build up quickly and sand easily. However it is too soft to use as a major part of the finish, and if you lay it too thick, the finish over it will crack and check. You should * Smoothing the wood properly up to 220-grit first * Apply a very thin wash coat/barrier layer (ideally dewaxed shellac) * Fill pores with a grain filler (only if it's a porous wood - Mahogany, ash, etc.) * Follow with a sanding sealer to get a surface you can flatten and smooth properly * Sand flat and thin up to 320-grit to get your finishing surface Then only is your a surface ready for finishing. Now start with your colour coats, which should be thin. Then coat everything with clear topcoats (which quite honestly makes alternating matte/gloss layers difficult). Followed by final sanding and polishing.
Spyke No real progress this weekend, she was a busy one. But here's a few pics from when I stripped the tape off for the gloss rings.
Spyke ...and, Voila! I'm not as impressed with the outcome as I would have liked, I'll cover this in a full synopsis once I post the assembled pics. For the mean time though, here's where we stand.
Spyke No, not something I'm considering. It's already a vague difference between the Satin and Gloss, a clear will gloss up the satin if you know what I mean.
FatBoy That looks really cool man, why you not impressed? Maybe you'll like it more once it's assembled.
Heath not if you use crystal clear , that shouldn't effect the gloss , satin finish , but will protect the finish from playing
Spyke Gerald Humphreys wrote Spyke Thats looks awesome man? Well done Now i want it back..heheh just kidding. nice work man I was wondering how long it was going to take before you posted! Thanks bud, as long as you approve, I'm happy.
