Your other consideration is that if you have a bound guitar or neck position dots under the finish, heat and strippers often damage those too ☹
I also didn't want to risk damaging the not so great wood underneath, so slow sanding is the way to go. Very therapeutic by the way.
I still think you should have chipped it off. The one nice thing about a polyester is that it doesn't penetrate the wood or blend into the sealer, so it's easy to get between the wood and the finish with blades and chisels.
