Ok so Roland launched their new cubes... But it looks like a step in the wrong direction.
I have always been a big fan of cubes and I own 2 of them. They're fun, built like tanks, sound good and have a ton of bells and whistles. It seems in the latest version they have swapped a few functions out for new ones. The looper function is gone and it now features an iOS link...

The looper was a very fun tool on the XL series and allows for some cool improv tricks. I understand not ALL guitarists will use this function, but still...
And then theres the apple interface... I dont own an iDevices since I advocate android, so I cant even use that function. I can see the merit in it, but I think its a bad move... Some solo artists can probably use it for affordable 'recording' etc., but there must be another way!!
While I have no real need for a looper either, I have to agree with you. The iOS link will probably be a popular feature in first-world countries, but the Apple uptake is too limited anywhere else.

Roland are not alone in this. It ticks me off when I see some of the musical software only for iOS, but not for Android. Is there a reason for this?

I think that Apple has for a few years now catered very well for the amateur musician and that paved the way for further development of applications like these.
A while ago I was ready up on difference between Andriod and IOS when I was trying to choose. And what came out with the regards to guitar apps like Jamup and Amplitude is that it is easier for those companies to provide app/tech support for iOS which has 3 different devices (ipod/ iPhone/iPad) than Andriod which can be loaded onto so many different devices, each with different hardware. So updates etc is easier on iOS than Andriod.

I don't know if that has changed since then.

But what if that is what Roland was going for? An ease of integration.

It is because Apple has almost no latency when it comes to recording audio through the usb/30pin/lightning connection.
Android only has latency, and they still havent figured out how to remove it.
this is why even IK Mulktimedia only have an audio jack input for any Android device, and not through the usb connector.
