  • Fair Trade? - MIJ Floyd Rose Fender Strat for MIJ Yamaha SG400

Just picked up this MIJ Floyd Rose Fender HSS Strat as discussed in a previous thread, but I honestly don't think a Floyd is for me... The neck & pups are really nice though, actually a very nice all round guitar - so I was thinking of selling it off in parts and hanging onto the neck to create a partscaster later on down the road...

But a friend may be keen to trade for his 80's MIJ Yamaha SG400 or Epi Les Paul - do you folks think this would be a fair trade?? I have a Tele at the moment, and she is truly a damn fine instrument, but I was thinking of adding a humbucking guitar or a strat to the equation for variety...

Thanks for your thoughts guys!
Fair trade based on what? Value of the guitars? Your wants or needs? I can't comment on the value, but I doubt the difference in value between the two is very large, but that's relative. If you are both getting the guitar you want and prefer, and you're both happy, then the small difference in value of the guitars are irrelevant imo

Nice answer Sean thanks, I tend to agree. My question was based on value and quality I guess - I can't find much info at all on the Yamaha SG400, which is why I asked for opinions..
Yeah, it's a fair trade. The SG 400 was a no-frills version of the SG, but Yamaha Japan was at the top of their game in 83 - '84 when they were made and it's more scaled-down cosmetics than scaled down quality. Better than a Les Paul Studio to my mind... As you rightly point out, an H-H guitar is also more of a contrast to your Tele than a Strat would be.

Sweet thanks for that Alan... Seems rather versatile too ?
