That's "Hugh" as in "Hugh's Fine Guitars".
Lineup includes:
Herringbone (Hugh and John van Nierop's band)
Dennis Shaw
Herman van der Berg
and special guests Sez Adamson, Nippy Cripwell and Wiam Otto.
Some good stuff here. Herman van der Berg bought another guitarist with them and they did an all Afrikaans set - not something that you hear at TJ's very often. Friends of mine on FB are professing embarrassment at being Afrikaans because of some piece of beyond-banal dumbed down pop that is going around. Had they been at TJ's last night they might be feeling a bit better about themselves and their culture this morning.
Wiam Otto is a pretty good bluegrass flat picker in the style of Bryan Sutton or Russ Barenberg. He got a great, ringing tone out of a Martin D28. He was good. So was Sez Adamson, surely one of SA's best kept guitaring secrets. He played a lot of acoustic guitar (he has the good taste to play a Morgan) and was excellent, throwing some jazzy, unexpected intervals into his solos. They traded acoustic solos on a few songs and then Adamson moved onto what he claims as his instrument, the pedal steel and blew all our socks off.
(I met Sez Adamson at a jam at Hugh's Fine Guitars a couple of years ago. He ended up playing my Morgan, but apologised because "I'm not really a guitar player". There was a song being played with people taking turns at solos. Hugh gave Sez a nod and this "not really a guitar player" took a solo that left everybody's jaws on the floor.)
