Hey guys, so the previous thread got me tinkering on my amp again.
I had two 16 ohm speakers wired to 8 ohms, but i don't like the sound of the sheffield so i disconnected it and wired the V30.
My question is can i run the 16 ohm V30 on the 4 ohm setting at the back?? I c hecked the manual and it said 60 W(rms) into 4, 8, or 16 Ω.
I understand it that on each one of those resistance the output of the amp remains 60 watts, so the 16 ohm V30 will make the amp work a bit harder coz its more resistance, but at low volume ( say 2/10) it should be ok? The amp sounds so much better on 4 ohm - but if it means i am damaging the transformer i would rather not go there.
Any advice would be much appreciated ?

Ok bud, don't just plug shit in and power up.
If I'm understand you right, you're putting just 1x 16ohm speaker onto the 4 ohm tap of your amp? So technically your amp is seeing 4x the load that it should. That is really not good. I'm usually quite lax with tube amps, but I would not run it like that - even to just see what it sounds like. Also, I'd personally be cautious running just 1x 60 watt speaker in a 60 watt amp too, in fact personally I'd wire a high wattage 32ohm resistor in parallel with the speaker, which'd give you around 11ohms, and run that on the 8 ohm tap. It'll drop the volume a hair, put you in safe territory wattage wise.
Maybe it'd be better if I explained it like this.. Lets say the total load your transformer is 'R'. 8 ohm speaker on the 8 ohm tap gives you 1R which is fine. 16ohm speaker on the 8ohm tap gives you 2R, which is still ok. 4ohm speaker on the 8ohm tap gives you 0.5R which is less ok, but still ok IME. The transformer is essentially just a multiplyer or divider. You can't just plug whatever speaker you want into whichever slot. 4 ohm speaker into 16ohm jack? 0.25R. Bye bye amp!

Must confess o read a bit before i changed the selector to 4 ohm, thought running it super low volume (basically the first sound that comes out via post volome) should'nt harm the amp.
Should be able to get the same sound via 16 ohm selection just hav to turn up the volume. But thanx for reply, so i'll run the 16 ohm v30 at 16 ohm 60 watt.
Just regarding the resistor with the speaker - good idea, don't know why peavey would make it stock with a 60watt speaker. That said, i never run the amp past 4/10 - 99.9% i run it at 1-2.5 ish, 1x12 or 2x12.
