Hi guys,
I'm looking to start another DIY amp project and instead of cannabilising an existing amp I'd like to start with a clean slate.
With the ZAR/$ exchange rate being what it is, ordering from Ebay/Ceriatone also seems out of the question.
Has anyone had a machine shop weld up a chassis locally? It 'looks' very simple... (famous last words :?)
Any ideas (preferably in Cape Town) where I can get this done locally?
Thanks ?

You can have them laser cut, I suggest that you find a template of chassis that you looking to build, then modify it to suit the application.
One can have them cut out of stainless or mild steel, even have the face/ back plate lettering laser etched on to the chassis.
or Download a copy of Inscape and design your own.

Cool thanks for the info. ?
Will look into Inscape.
Can most engineering shops handle something like this if I give them a design?

Cutting and bending a chassis is pretty straight forward for most engineering works. I can't recommend anyone in Cape Town, but it shouldn't be a challenge to find someone who is able to do this

My recommendation is Fabrinox in Paarl. Had mine done for my 5E3 there, and have since sent a couple of other things to them. Very well priced and efficient and they're my favorite sheet metal workshop so far.
You can download a copy of Draftsight (a 2D engineering drawing program - pretty straightforward to use if you've ever had any experience with Corel Draw/Illustrator) and then just send them a flattened .dxf of what you want and explain in which directions the bends need to be. The limiting factor here pricewise is the material and thickness you choose. Stainless steel is inherently expensive (but all told still cheaper than an import chassis), aluminium a little cheaper and mild steel the cheapest (and ugliest, you would need to do some finishing work on this).
If you want to know where to get etching and filling done (if you go that route) try DOWD/Pezula signage. You'll probably add on about R200 per face for that.

You can use Metalgrapho or Techni Punch. The company I work for have used both for enclosures we needed. They do bending, cutting, powder coating, silk screening and such. I guess the best would be to get a quote from them all.

Thanks Guys ?
This is exactly what I needed!
