Yeah, I know. I'm just a grumpy b@stard who's tired of these bigger gigs. Over the last few years they've become something I endure to see bands whose records I like, who then do nothing to blow me away. So when some dude talks shit for half the show, I get cranky. I like a couple of hives songs (the first three that I heard ten years ago or so when they hit the radio. After that it all started to sound the same) and I thought that freeze thing they did was cool. But I want more music, less talk.
Skunk Anansie's set was areal breath of fresh air for me. It reminded me that these big gigs can be good based on all-round musical performance not just lights, smoke and mirrors, and bullshit. Gotta be one of the top three international rock performances I've seen. Up there with Muse (Bellamy pretty much didn't say anything other than hello, thank you, and goodbye btw) and Chris Cornell (might have come across as better than he was because I was expecting stuff along the lines of that James Bond thing he did and next thing he played Let me Drown and Outshined and stuff like that). Those two performances left me with expectations of big name bands. So far only Skunk Anansie have met them.
Yeah I guess it's a different strokes for different folks thing ? or me it's more about being entertained in a live situation. When I see a band live, I expect more than just their music. I want a show. If I just wanted to eat all their songs, I'd buy the albums ? that's why I loved both skunk and the hives.... Alt J may have just walked on with a CD player and stood on stage until the album finished... But for me it's definitely more about showmanship than solely musical performances ?
