Buttery and van der Spuy are doing two more shows on the Highveld this weekend. Saturday lunch time they're at
Die Ou Pastorie in Magaliesberg. Reportedly this is sold out, so if you're moved to drive out there then call the venue first.
Then in the evening they play at
Saartjie se Garage in Melville. The show is advertised as starting at 19:00.
Catch them! Two very good players. Amongst other things they will settle (or get rid of) the old debate about whether high levels of chops can still result in music. These guys can play it simple and let the tune do it's own work, or they can turn on the technique. There is no debate (or it's a meaningless draw).
Van der Spuy mostly plays something he calls a "quatro guitar". It looks a bit like a renaissance instruments. Nine frets to the body, 5 courses of paired strings. Very versatile ranging from a mandolinish sound to something approaching harpsichord - in his hands of course. He also plays a Gibson thin line acoustic (no sound hole).
Buttery plays a small mahogany bodied Martin, sitar and marimbas.
I enjoyed this show hugely. They each bring their own compositions and style to the show, and that lends an extra compositional richness. They complement each other very well. Buttery in particular has this fab singing tone that gives his solos a joyous quality.
