I have some debate going with someone. The subject is skills of yesteryear guitarists vs new guitarists... so I promptly made one suggestion: Tosin Abasi vs Robert Fripp. I think one of them will make the other cry... it depends on you who you think it will be. Clearly he didn't get the second part which mentions "depends on you". Sooooo.... which do you think? Depending on your age, you may or may not agree with this. Skill is not only technique but songcraft too... so go for it. I will insert a Tosin vid cos most of you should know Robert Fripp =

BTW - back to the original question. The answer is simple - they will admire each other for what they do and learn something from each other. They wouldn't be where they are today without the ability to look at what others are doing, appreciate it and cop the bits they like.

However, this is my problem with most prog (old or new): The audience (and some bands) view it too much like a competition. Who is faster/more complex/"best"/has more strings on their guitar than other people have in their guitar collections? ELP Syndrome... Meanwhile, the best players and bands don't let their playing get in the way of making the best music they can.

BTW - the thing that keeps me coming back to KC (specifically the golden era - Discipline to Thrak, IMO), is they constantly pushed the envelope and consistently came up with music that was quite different from anything else. Most other prog bands are still basically working on the original template for Prog that Fripp laid down in the '60s with In the Court of the Crimson King (while most everyone else was doing the psychedelic bad blues or heavy blues things), while Fripp himself had already moved on by the mid-70s.

Thrak blew my already fragile mind apart when I first heard it in about 98/99. Although I didn't understand it at the time, after all I was a death metal bunny and everything else sucked, I do understand the level of musicianship in my later years and now it truly is HFS!!!!

We can say to the young musicians to listen and learn but they will only be looking out for one thing that they have in their music. If it doesn't have it, then it sux. I sadly was like this (and I'm sure many of you were too) and I'm so glad I got out of this idiotic train of thought when I did (bout 10 or so years ago).

History always seems to repeat itself, payback is a bitch. But at least there be some likeminded folk here.. woohoo!!!

It struck me, I might as well get some King Crimson. 'Cos it's increasingly difficult to find good new music I don't already have. (Not because 'all new music sucks', just because I'm so picky.)

I hope they sound somewhat like Gordian Knot 'cos that's ok-to-very-brilliant.

(I'm not really very young by the way. Don't tell Thraeol's hordes of teenage fans. (Oh that was funny.))

Gordian Knot is like one facet of the Thrak era King Crimson (two guitarists, two drummers, two stick players). Gordian Knot always reminds me of some of Trey Gunn's stuff (one of the Stick players in question - the other being Tony Levin) - but he often leans a little bit more to the World music stuff.

So start with Thrak. Also listen to: Discipline to see if you can get into the 80's KC; and In the Court of the Crimson King to check out the '60s/'70s stuff.
