@smurf - yeah, these two. Abasi can take Petrucci to the cleaners anytime, but not Fripp. The field is even. Both are jazz bunnies and noted for it. Abasi assumes the role of the new groove machines era that can widdle too, and with wicked grooves of note. Brett Garsed would have a tough time keeping up (and he is so damn good), but Fripp will bring the other side of the equation and obliterate while complimenting. Then Abasi would return the favour.
I think you're overestimating Abasi a little there ? Petrucci is equally as complex and theoretically knowledgeful, and is a far stronger live player than Tosin, likewise with Garsed, Petrucci doesn't bare his claws as often but the man is absolutely on par if not better, as for Garsed if you check out Mark Varney Project or Planet X you'll hear that he is more than capable of keeping up, his instructional DVD Rock Fusion also has some absolutely silly moments.
You've also got to break down the techniques and Abasi is a huge propent of economy picking, which in some ways is easier to achieve speed with and in other ways can be fairly limiting, where as Petrucci is an alternate picking demon which honestly in my opinion takes far more discipline to achieve his level of speed. Abasi hybrid picks, but nowhere near the level of Garsed and if you pay attention to the intervals Garsed uses it becomes very apparent that there is some other level of crazy going on there ?

I think Periphery strike a good balance between complex instrumentation and damn catchy songs.
Yes and no...From an instrumental stand point Periphery aren't that complex, they are one of my favourite bands at the moment so I'm not saying that as a hater, it's just that when you really break down what's going on it's just not really anywhere near as advanced as the other names being mentioned so far.
The guitarists aren't exactly slouches either and have a really good penchant for melody. As displayed in the solos on this track:

Fun fact, Jake Bowen, who takes the second solo in this song, is John Petrucci's nephew ?
