NGD!! Oh yes! Its been at least three weeks since the last one!

So, as most of you good folk (especially those who pay attention at the back) will know, I've got quite some appreciation of semi-hollow and hollow body guitars/basses. And some of you may remember a particular guitar that I have expressed my 'favour' for in previous postings....

Well, yesterday, one such opportunity arose to get hold of such a guitar.... But, with cashflow being rather tight at present, I didn't have the available funds to buy. I contacted the seller on the off chance that he was looking for an effects unit, and offered my Boss GT-Pro as a partial trade, and balanced out with some cash, and the seller accepted, as his effects unit had recently blown up, and so... Without further adoooo..... I announce my newest member of the family....

My PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow.....

Only issue I have with it.... Its BLACK! I've never liked black guitars, and it seems such a waste to have a guitar with a nice maple top on it hidden away! So, I may consider having the top stripped and refinished? We'll see? There are a few little dints and scratches on the top anyway, so this is helping my bias!

The only other issues are a slight chip on the tip of the headstock, and the plastic cap of the switch is broken, so I need to source a new one.

Spent a few moments setting it up this afternoon, and I'm really liking it. Only drawback now is I no longer have a tuner to fine-tune with since the GT-Pro has now gone! ?

Nice Big G ! Black is not a nice colour...ebony is nicer... ? More serious though...you'll get use to it in due course....Maybe you should also advertise for someone who could make your PRS look pretty ! LOL ! (the Gibson guy)

I won't make (as in can't afford to) make any quick decisions over the top... I'll rather play the thing for a while first, and see how it fits in around my other 'family members' first. Every guitar has to earn its place 'on the team' here, so I'll let it get over that obstacle first.

Wormwood, usually, on an electric guitar each string has its own saddle. This can be adjusted backwards and forwards by means of a screw. Using your tuner, tune a string by playing it openly. Then play the same string on the twelfth fret and look at the tuner. If the intonation is out you will see that the note is either sharper or lower than when played in the open position. Adjust the saddle position backwards or forwards until you get the same tuner result in the open or fretted position.

This will be an accurate enough method and, unless you run out of saddle travel, enable you to set your intonation accurately enough to not be able to hear any anomaly as you play up and down the neck.

@Wormwood... As with ALL the SE models (I think) it has the PRS 'pre-intonated' bridge, which is preset to get the right intonation out the box. This is something that put me off them for agood while, until I realised that there are two tiny screws (one either end of the bridge) to allow you to make minor adjustments, should the intonation go out slightly. I can't do a true accuracy test, as I no longer have a digital tuner, but my 'analogue Tuners', otherwise known as ears, which are pretty tuned in cannot pick up any intonation issues. If I was to really try hard, I may say that the high 'E' is ever so slightly sharper on the harmonic than the open string, but certainly not enough to make me reach for the allen keys. Its that minute that it could be caused by not quite placing the tip of my finger in exactly the right point to get the harmonic! IT really is close!

@Alan.... Yup! I did got it! Thanks again for your assistance! With regards to the sound and playabiliy, I have been so busy the past two days that I've only managed 10 minutes of actual playing! In that time though, I can say that as with any PRS or PRS SE, it plays fantastically! I really love the necks on these! Having somewhat larger hands than most, and rarely visiting the top end of the fretboard, that infamous neck block doesn't bother me at all. Infact I quite like it. The sound I need to play with a bit I think? The guy who I got it from, found the pickups to be rather hot (something I don't remember from previous trials of these particular guitars), so he lowered the pups right down low, so I'm having to readjust them accordingly, which is proving to be somewhat frustrating, as I can't quite get them to balance out yet. Again though, I've only had a short amount of time to mess with it, so I'm sure I'll get there?!

@Conrad.... Man after my own heart my friend! The 'amber' or 'natural' finish version of this is super stunning! Makes it for me, one of the best looking guitars around. As mentioned, that's my only criticism of this guitar is the horrid black waste of a beautiful flamed maple top! If I can find someone I can trust to strip the top off and refinish it natural, or slightly tinted, and can afford such a task, then I think that's what I will do? Don't mind the back and sides being black, but that top needs to stand out!

However just leave it how it is ..... I heard from a salesman black guitars sell easier than others ?
anyway at the cost of a pro respray you may as well just sell it on and buy one the colour /tint you want .....

Tone wise ... I liked em. I looked at one a few months back ... But i was put off by the petite body ... I like big bodied semi hollows ... Like a 335 but this is very small for an semi hollow like a strat or even more streamlined ... Thats all that stopped me buying one

Yer, that's why I'm not going to make any rushed decisions. I may well sell it on to fund one in the finish I'd prefer, if I manage to sell off some of my other gear to make up the difference? Or I may just settle with it being black? As black guitars go, its certainly not the worst I've seen! Its a good quality finish, but its just not my taste.

Time will tell, and as I said earlier, every guitar has to earn its place here, so that will be the decider!

PRS hollows are serious eye candy for me, and they don't come any better in my view. Infact, my ultimate dream would be to have a signature model PRS Hollow body 5 string bass! Who's signature? Mine of course!!! ..... But then I wake up all disappointed!

My PRS Custom 22 artist package has a similar hardtail bridge. I have had the guitar for 8 years and never had an intonation issue.
As far as I know G, it's used on all PRS hardtail models, Se or American.

The wraparound bridge works well with the fixed compensation and hex screw adjustment for the whole bridge. Smith has always maintained that wraparounds are the best sounding Gibson bridges. They are also very comfy underhand.

My Singlecut came with .009 gauge strings on and I immediately upped it to .011s with no problems. Smallest tweak to the two hex screws and everything came into line.

You and me both Norman! You and me both! The PRS hollowbodies are just sublime, and one day when I grow up (is this possible for musicians) I'll maybe get one! Its the kind of guitar that I'd seriously consider selling everything I possibly could to get one, but even then I doubt I'd have enough?!
