I was in Menlyn look and listen yesterday (the biggest one I know) and their were 3 albums that I wanted... 2 of them they did not have and told me to drive to their Centurion store (it was already a shlep for me to drive to menlyn!) and the other was an import that was going to cost me R265... not happening, i bought all 3 of those albums from itunes when i got home - for R210 with one click and sitting on my big bum. (albeit in 256kbit aac ☹)
So yes, i know buying hard copy it is still an option, but im sorry, in this day and age, convenience is king and the time and petrol spent looking for those cd's yesterday was a waste. Also, alot the music i like I have a really hard time finding locally and when i do it is an import for too much Rands.
I suppose it depends on what one has in one's piggy bank, but I just took delivery of a parcel of Thompson CD's (there being more than one Richard Thompson fan in this country, believe it or not) and when all was done and dusted the landed price was in the ball park for what I'd expect to pay in a shopping mall here in SA. Plus I got them quicker than (by their own admission) L&L could have got them. Now, of course, all that money, aside from the amount added by the SAPO, went straight out the country. Being completists we were also ordering a title that is not made available to retail stores or e-tailers, and ordering this way was way cheaper than going to a gig.
Yes, 320mp3's, if encoded properly are alright by me, but still, i just believe it should be easier to get something in the format you want it in.
here's hoping to the future and not being tempted to support pirated downloads ever again! :?
This I don't understand. It's not incumbent on the artist or the label to release the recordings in any given format. If a thing is not legally available in a format that I want that doesn't make it OK for me to just grab it from a source that pays the owners of the material nothing.
