I dunno, from first look, Cape Town property prices look pretty horendous... where would you recommend, ( as close to the city as possible) would be a good area to stay, safety and price wise?
The prices can be horrendous. I was looking at renting a unfurnished batchlor flat in the heart of the CBD, 60sqm w/parking = R14k/mth...! ?
If possible, work flexi-time - easiest way to avoid traffic. My mate has a 6:30-3pm shift in the CBD and it's rare for him to experience traffic jams.
If not, anything CBD-ish (Greenpoint/Seapoint, Gardens, Vredehoek) can be found at reasonable prices - occasional petty crime, but apply common sense and you'll be fine. In the past, I've been tempted by

There is always the opportunity to stash some stuff with your friends in D'ville, and use some short-term rentals (2-4 weeks) to get to know a few areas in the CBD - I spent Jan bouncing from guesthouse to backpackers in the CBD and had a lot of fun - especially now, the silly season is largely over, you can get reasonable rates for longer stays.
Good luck!
