first: (don't regret this one) giggsy sold me a (forget the make) sg in cherry red. there was a ding in the paint work, but otherwise it was in perfect nick, so i got it at a great price. took it to andy mcgibbon to get them to just touch up the ding. unfortunately, it was in the shop when they got hit for the second time, and andy decided to close up. i knew he had a project where he was donating guitars to kids who needed them, so i mailed him and told him if the sg was still in the shop, he could make it part of that project; i hadn't paid for the repair yet. i also told giggsy what i'd done and he was hundreds with it. good man.

second: (two YUUUUUGGGGEEEEEE regrets) had an epiphone gold top with p-90s, and a yamaha 12-string my dad bought me. traded them both in on an ovation (round back copy). i promptly returned to the store because it was hideous to play, only to learn i then had to trade that instrument in on something else. i saw my two guitars hung up like sides of beef with effectively learning the lesson that you never trade instruments through a shop. ever.

third, and worst: bought a prs custom 22 in oz, kinda like an ocean green finish. was gorgeous. let it go to another forumite (lucky guy!) for a pittance. no hard feelings - he scored a luck - but, i do regret letting it go, especially coz it was the second prs i've sold for next to nothing.

you live, but clearly not everyone learns...

Lefty guitars are like hens' teeth on a headless chicken. In PE in 2007 I picked up a lefty 40th Anniversary USA Strat '94 from Cape Town via Gumtree. It was a two-tone tobacco burst, maple fret board, with matching tweed Fender hard case with orange crush interior. Played and sounded like a dream. Price: R5000.

4 years later, I sold it to raise cash for a plane ticket to some guy in Cape Town via Gumtree for R10 000. It was a great trip, but I've regretted the sale ever since...

I learn so much from my mistakes, I'll make a few more ?

I still kinda regret selling my Daphne blue Classic 50's Fender Strat. Yes, my Warmoth is better, but still. Same with a tobacco burst SX I had for a while. Had a great neck.

Biggest regret! Selling my original Boss DS1. Ended up buying a new generation DS1 a while back but the tone just isn't the same! LOL!

Another take on this...

My very first guitar was an SG copy, in cherry, that I sold after a very short time and bought a cheap strat copy. Many years later the cherry SG is one of my favourite looking guitars, and I really regretted getting rid of the one I had. As far as I remember the action was terrible and it had some very thick and tarnished strings. I probably didn't even know then that these things could be changed.

Anyway, so a few days ago I saw an ad on gumtree for what could actually be the guitar I owned. Let's just say I'm not so regretful anymore.

Only positive - it's got the whammy bar, those are damn near impossible to find on the jap copies. ?

Yeah, my memory had definitely over-glamourised it. I probably wouldn't buy that mint at any price.
