Hey folks!
A friend of mine who plays almost every other type of instrument has now taken up guitar and his wife got him a Santa Fe for Christmas. The guitar however doesn't have a pickup and he would like to install one. What's the cheapest/ most efficient option? And in case of an installation, which luthier would you recommend for the job?

You can get one of those cheapies from cash crusaders that attached to the guitar sound hole. Got a preamp with volume and tone knob. I think they dixons.

+1 on sound hole pickups - they are inexpensive, don't need pro installation and don't need a preamp. I wouldn't recommend a real cheapy like the Dixon, there are plenty of other decent makes available that are not too spendy.

I got a Seymour Duncan Woody XL for under a G. Not the best but quite alright. But I've seen some others pop up in the classifieds here from time to time. I like the idea of adjustable poles for Bronze and PB strings.

On a Santa Fe, I would go Dixon. If he's still playing guitar come July: Upgrade guitar!

Thanx guys! I'll pass on the messages and have him make up his mind according to his budget.

The sound hole pickup is easily transferred if he upgrades guitar. But I'd rather spend the money on a setup - get the action sorted out and give it some chance of playing in tune. Then if he finds that's enjoying it and progressing he can start looking at pickups.
