  • Saw a Lawsuit era Ibanez Lp custom...

I was wandering the antique shops in cape town cbd today amd about three blocks from marshall music CT in a small antiques store I saw a guitar case containing a black Ibanez LP custom copy for R4000. though I think the shopkeeper may be up for bartering.
Looks in a good condition considering it's age.
Thought I'd post this for anyone who's interested. Dont know how many guitarists pass through there.
Store?! I've been looking to pick up a LP shape.
Well Im not sure what the name is of the store, but It's in the antiques arcade in Long street. If you walk through from the long street side its the store just before the Russian antiques store called Babushka.

      Hope this helps!
Post some pix if you buy her!
We've covered this a number of times. Late '70s LPs are basically lookalikes, not accurate copies. For starters, they're almost all bolt-ons. Secondly many feature a basically plywood top. I'm not saying that you can't enjoy playing them but they're not worth close to R4K. Top class Japanese copies from the late '70s (after '78) include Greco, Burny, Navigator, Aria, Yamaha, and Tokai. The Ibanez copies are not in the same league, which is not to say they weren't making a number of other great guitars at the time.

+10,000. You can pick up a relatively new Vintage, PRS SE or Epiphone for less to not much more and they will all blow the IBZ out of the water (even an Epi).
Speaking of which, I do see a PRS SE245 for R4k on Gumtree.

THAT, is an absolutely excellent deal. I have no idea why that thing is still for sale.
Gibson filed the lawsuit in 1977, ???, not realising that in 1976 Ibanez had already changed the headstock. ..there was no lawsuit.

"On June 28, 1977, Norlin, the parent company of Gibson, filed a lawsuit against Elger (Ibanez) in Philadelphia Federal District Court . The case was "Gibson Vs. Elger Co." with Gibson claiming trademark infringement based on the duplicate "open book" or "moustache" headstock design of the Ibanez copies. Allegedly Gibson had threatened to sue Elger/Ibanez for a long time regarding the use of the headstock which Norlin claimed as a Gibson trademark. Ironically, by the fall of 1976 Ibanez had redesigned their headstocks to look much like those found Guild guitars. The new headstock design even appeared in the 1976 catalog! So, conspiracy theorists, by the time the lawsuit was actually filed, the headstocks had already been changed. While "lawsuit" head generally means a Gibson copy headstock, the Ibanez headstock at the time of the lawsuit was actually a copy of a Guild headstock. It is an urban legend that the Gibson/Norlin lawsuit was filed against a number of Japanese companies. It is also commonly held it was over the exact copying of American designs. Neither of these urban legends are true."
