Hey Bob, can you recomend a Martin Simpson CD fro me to try please?
I noticed one on local iTunes called "righteousness & Humility" ...I think
Righteousness and HUMIDITY. If you buy the actual physical CD you'll get the story behind the album title - and more, Simpson writes great liner notes.
I don't have a lot of his stuff, and I have the more recent CDs. For me the two I'd recommend are
Prodigal Son and the most recent release
Purpose and Grace. One of the interesting things about Simpson is that he has a foot in so many camps - American styles as well as the English styles that he first made his name in. Also he doesn't just play great guitar but great banjo and lap steel as well. I believe that
Bootleg USA is really good, but I haven't heard it yet. That's because I know that I'm getting it for Christmas ?
Purpose and Grace has some great performances by the various guest players, a strong band behind Simpson (including the great pedal steel player BJ Cole and a terrific harmonica player), some solo pieces from Simpson and some great slide playing by him on the closing track.
