To my mind muting is
huge, probably only second in importance to (and is part of) timing. It's not just about doing Al DiMeola style muted note runs - It's the key to controlling your instrument (especially if you're talking an amplified guitar). You should be controlling note and chord durations, muting unwanted open strings and, in some cases, using it for percussive effect. Quite honestly, it's one of the things that really separates the good players from the bad.
