New bank notes featuring an image of former president Nelson Mandela are expected 2 start circulating 2day. The old bank notes will be illegal.

I've been assigned with the difficult task of collecting the old notes.I don't like this job but it's a community service, for a crime I committed.

Errr, if you are not joking - the 'old' tender (notes) is still legal. I cannot find any official evidence of an expiry date of the 'old' tender.

i for one think they are alright. a lot of other countries in the world's currencies have people's pips on them. and i'd go as far as to say we probably have one of the world's better people to put on a note. they look pretty cool in person - those pics don't do them justice at all.. they're quite a bit brighter and more interesting than the old stock.

Personally I hate the look of the new notes. Nothing personal ,I just rate it looks cheap and amatuerish. But the biggest problem I have with it is how much this, like the changing street names, is costing tax payers. Not a political rant but I'm sure there are better ways to spend public funds. Also, if the old notes aren't disapearing, how is this affecting inflation as obviously the more money there is in the economy the more inflation creaps in.

Bank notes get destroyed and replaced all the time. They don't have a very long life - the global average is 2 years. If the RB wasn't printing the new Mandela notes they'd be printing new notes of some other design. The designs change all the time, partly to make life harder for forgers by incorporating new anti-forging techniques.
