anyone watching out for i5 launch tonite?

i know you're not supposed to discuss religion here, but... apple's supposed to launch the iphone 5 today. and perhaps a mini-ipad. about 19:00 our time (just in time to be eclipsed by the last england t20). anyone watching out for the news with any real interest? i'm holding out on my upgrade until i can at least lay eyes on the thing. word on the asphalt is that it will be here about late october, mid-november. interested to hear your thoughts dh

speaking of striking, one thing that struck me is that, almost without exception, every one of those nanas who made the comparison between the iphone'5' and the iphone'4s' had some sort of cover on their iphone'4s'. OF COURSE it's going to feel lighter and smaller and thinner you halfwit!

Well this Apple fanboy-knob-halfwit-braindead-nincomwit goes through life happily relying on my Apple mobile products. All my Apple products in fact.

My 6 and 11yr daughters both are required by their school to have iPad's and are being educated with them......... in conjunction with regular hard books and pencil and paper, dry erase board etc. It's fantastic. Schools are not going for other manufacturers.....iPad's.

And reliability......? None of my Apple products......and I own a bunch, for a long time now......have ever failed me. My iPhone 3G had a smashed screen and was still working. My 4S has been outstanding so far. Then there are all the iPod's we own, iPod touches, iPod Nano's, a 3rd Gen iPod, teenie iPods, fat one's white, silver and black one's...... my wife's iPad, the Mac computers and laptop. Even the router in my house in an Apple Extreme.

Outstanding products.

But you guys carry on slamming...... it's actually funny really. Faux anger.

The new 5 is going to prove to be a great phone and if one of you guys bagging on them was given a brand new one free, you'd change your tune......right?

I dont have an iphone. I got the Galaxy s2 about a year back because it was plenty cheaper contract. But I always wonder why pretty much every site (vendor or other) advertizes that they've got an app for your iphone/ipad but I never see an android app or one specifically for your Galaxy tablet. Regarding the price of Apple products, I think that they maintain the attitude: "Our phone/tablet too expensive for you? Go on then, go and play with a Galaxy or something".

But hey, call it double standards but I can understand why someone would prefer a guitar because it has Gibson on the headstock. Still, I can't understand why someone would prefer an electronic device because it has an apple on the back. I do believe there is a difference.

I can believe that someone believes something without evidence or justification - I simply don't respect that belief one iota ? In fact, the lack of an attempt to substantiate such a belief almost immediately makes the case for the other side for me.

I believe brand is important.
It can represent a proxy for quality, or mojo or maybe just a nice feeling ...
Don't get why this logic wouldn't work for any brand though ...

Yes. I agree. Brand is often a good proxy for quality. The Japanese camera makers for example - irrespective of idiotic arguments between adherents to one brand or another - have consistently offered amazing quality products since the 1950s - such that if you bought a Nikon, Canon, or Olympus camera, you are pretty much guaranteed a top notch purchase, barring a few budget options. To this day they compete on features, because quality is so high.

But of course it can go wrong. Land Rover were known for their reliability, and then they let that go to hell for a while in the '90s. So you bought a Land Rover because they were more reliable than other brands when the evidence at the time was saying they were far less reliable.

And I think there are differences here as well as similarities. The differences would be that the products here are more substantially different than different manufacturers guitars that differ quite slightly. The similarity for me is that many who choose the more prestigious brand, but not all by any means, overlook the specs under the bonnet, and are drawn by the status-satisfaction of the logo.

I hadn't even consider what sort of evidence there might be to prove that guitars and smart phones are different. Come to think of it, I don't even have evidence for why I believe that Buck Rogers was better than the Six Million Dollar Man. I don't believe it is incumbent on me to prove or convince you or anyone that there is a difference. The fact that I believe there is a difference is good enough for me, if you believe the two are exactly the same, that's your prerogative.

I've put my opinion out there, you're welcome to put yours out there. Obviously we're not going to agree on everything. You may well believe that I am an idiot for my beliefs, that's fine by me. It'd be hypocritical of me if I wasn't fine by that, seeing as I am on record to consider anyone who believes a smart phone to be superior/inferior, based not on evidence but on the presence/absence of a logo, an idiot.

Exactly. Who used the word idiot? And what's this thing about respecting what people believe being the same as respecting them? If my dad suddenly says he believes in the Loch Ness Monster, I'm not going to respect that belief at all, despite still respecting him. And I don't respect any beliefs without evidence, despite frequently, but not always, respecting the people who hold them. I don't even respect my own beliefs that are un-evidenced - even though I may cling to them for whatever reason.

This is exactly my point. You are an extremely smart guy - clearly - and have reasons for thinking the things that you do. That's a fact. Clearly we're not wondering about why you believe smart phones and guitars are different. phones are shorter, for one thing. We're asking why you think brand obsession over considered practicality, or technical preference, is foolish with phones, but not with guitars.

And I suspect that you have reasons.

OK, I'm always up for a good debate, and so far I'm trailing, so I'll play. ?

I have not made any claims pertaining to "brand loyalty". I can understand brand loyalty whether it is for a guitar, smart phone or breath mints. But if it is brand loyalty that makes you choose a guitar or a smart phone, at least be honest about it. Tell me, "I want an Apple because I like Apple." or "I've owned many Apple products and I've always been happy with them", something similar to Highway Chile's response in this thread. That is different however to claiming that the phone is faster or lighter when, in fact, you have no idea whether it is faster or lighter.

Now, while it was a comical juxtaposition of my two quotes, they were very unrelated and, at least one of them, was taken well out of context. The discussion about the guitar brand loyalty was not about making claims that one guitar has better tone, sustain or tuning stability than another but simply that some members prefer Gibson (or whichever brand) guitars purely for the emotional value of it. The member in this case, chris77, was being perfectly honest about his motives. He admitted that other brands might even be better for less money, but he wanted Gibson.

Surely, the difference is not that hard to see?
