This was a live gig, now you are either 'live' or you are not - where do you draw the MillyVanilly line ?
Where indeed? Playing to a click track? Or to a drummer who's playing to a click track?
It's not just Milli Vanilli. Mid 80s there were rumours about Sting using back tracks or canned vocals for some songs. I saw him and Peter Gabriel and the Boss live in '88 and you know, in those big stadiums and with all that MIDI stuff they've got on stage how would you know?
I agree that "live is live", but "live" is open to debate. You could have a keyboard player trigger samples in real time. Live? I saw Chris Letcher recently, and he would hit a key and a whole bunch of sound effects would go off. He hit the key in real time, and they were sort of ambient noise things (cars hooting and so on) rather than actual notes, so he didn't need a click track and he hit the keys in real time. Live?
There is a trap. You make this big, multi-layered album with an impressive sound - now what are you going to give your fans in concert? Tricky.... Just about anybody with an album produced by Mutt Lange must have needed some extra help when playing live.
The Beatles recorded stuff they couldn't possibly have done live.
