Gave up and palmed it off on the missus. Not sure of the thinking, but she quickly piped up - Depache Mode ?
The missus knows her stuff! French dépêche in this context means "dispatch" - from Old French despesche/despeche - or "news report" and mode "fashion". 'Rag-trade' a synonym for fashion industry. Martin Gore has said, "It means hurried fashion or fashion dispatch".
