G-Man
So I jammed this weekend and was asked if I'd be keen to try out / join a local band as a rythym guitarist.
I have no idea what to expect, I'm still weighing up the pros and cons. I have zero live playing experience, only played with other people a few times and I'm not sure what to expect from the whole thing. I mean, I practiced with the intention of playing with others at some point, but now it's here and I'm not sure. Any wise words?

Do a try out on the basis that you and the band can decide after the try-out. That gives you some kind of opportunity to figure out if you feel like playing what they play, if you can get on with them as people, if your equipment is up to the job, if your skills are sufficient and so on. You and they will be making a decision on the basis of more information.

I wouldn't call my words wise but here are some words nonetheless: Go for it! It's addictive ? I've only played live about three times (then bands ended and life happened etc.) and those times have got me hooked (gotta organise something). I'd say take the opportunity. If you get on with the other guys then give it a shot. The only way to get live playing experience is to play?

And ja, if you could do it on a try-out basis that'd be best.

What are your concerns? the fact that its a punk/metal band? or that you'll be playing live?
If its a change from the regular music you're used to playing then you'll need to decide if thats the path you want to follow.
If its the fact that you'll be playing live gigs, then i'd say GO FOR IT.
Nothing beats the feeling of having a good gig with a responsive crowd.
You will be understandibly nervous, most superstars still get nervous before doing their gig, so thats a normal reaction.
Practise your parts well (individually and as a band) and you wont regret it.
good luck :yup:

Do it!
Get as much playing live experience as you can.
Don't worry about the genre, even it was an Afrikaans Gospel Reggae band, the experience and what you learn will benefit you hugely
I waited many years, did my first open mic in my late 40's. Wish I had done it earlier

If its the style you play, then you'll love it! If however, you're not into the whole style/scene, then I dont think you'll stay for a long time of your own accord - as in, you'll quit.
Its pretty damn cool to come up with a few riffs, throw them into a song and see where it goes. Just have fun with it, come up with a few riffs and jam. Good luck!
EDIT: To add to this, and I dont mean to be a killjoy. But if you're not keen, or really dont have time or whatever after trying out and hearing what thy got etc. Please just be honest with them. It sucks having a guy in a band who's not quite as interested as the others.

Just do it, you will regret not doing it more than doing it and it doesnt work out. You will gain experience.

Any idea what the band is called? Maybe I'll know them? ?

Seize the day man. Life is short. Get out there, confront your fears, and they will be overcome. One way or the other the experience will enrich your life.
And no, the style doesn't matter. But the word "punk" always means that your attitude is more important than being able to play everything note perfect. Just get out there and give it your best shot.

Jammin's cool, writing new stuff is great and recording it is brilliant. But playing live is the culmination of all those things.
My life would be incomplete without it.
And when you get to the venue no matter how small or insignificant it may be its a great feeling to know you gonna be one of the elite...one of the featured musos!

Go for it,always play skilfully...good luck

Ok. In retrospect that wasn't a very helpful comment... I think it's a great opportunity and you will never regret trying, if it isn't for you or playing live isn't for you then at least you know. If it does work for you prepare to fall in love with a whole other dimension of music....

Oh yea!....but they definitely have a more Metallic edge than the trad punk bands of the seventies.
