Hey guys,

So the home recording setup is coming along and if all goes well today, I can get the last piece of the puzzle (for now): Monitors.

At the moment I'm looking for something in the R4500 range, and the KRK Rokit's keep popping up.

Are they any good?

What else is out there that's good in that price range?

Gimme your recommendations...
There is a Mackie monitor in that range.

One thing I've noticed since buying the M-Audio Bx5's is that I'd rather have had 8" drivers. I JUST miss those lower frequencies. Although my mixes have improved drastically I still feel that little bit unconfident about them because I know I'm not hearing everything I'd like to.

So you're saying I need to check for 8"...

your budget may allow for that, so yes.

My way around it is to keep an FFT filter hand so I can see if it's booming below the lowest frequency of the monitors, which in my case is 56Hz.
I got the Mackie MR5 (MK2) Monitors and I love them to bits. I think they were about in that price range. I got lots and lots of discount at TOMS when I bought them, my interface and a couple of mics.

That's a really excellent price. They are over R10K retail these days. Almost too good...

Ya store loyalty goes a long way it appears...
It depends how big your room is. If it's a smaller room, 6" drivers are a nice compromise. Rokits are quite good, but you can do better for the price if you look around on Gumtree etc. I just find them a little flubby.

I have to say I've never bought any speaker, be it home entertainment, amp etc secondhand. I just do not trust people enough. Sure, it's in "as new" condition...how will I know how many times the thing's been pushed to the limit....no thanks, although, there are some good deals out there.

But I'd rather add a couple of bucks and buy them new. Peace of mind.

I've founnd the Mackies generally have exaggerated bass response.
I see what you mean, and I agree. I got lucky and bought KRK V6's for R3000 used, and they perform flawlessly. It is a risk, though.

Well, then there are obviously other options new.

                      How big is your room?

At the moment it is the spare room of our flat. I'd say about 3x3 I think. So 8's may be overkill but I also want something that works well, but also has longevity. When we move to a bigger place (hopefully soon) I dont wanna upgrade the monitors again.
I would go with 6's then. Each have their own pros and cons. Some 8" monitors aren't great in the mid-range, while 6" excel at that (and the mid-range is arguably the most important for modern music ).
6", 8" are quite different imo. But the main thing is to check what the frequency range is of the ones you might want. That'll give you an idea.

A small room doesn't make low frequencies appear out of a speaker that doesn't send them. You can go for lower wattage though.
I called the music shop I buy from.
The rokit 8 are just under 8K retail, and they can do a nice price for you.
send me a pvt msg if you're interested ?

Thanks! But, like I mentioned I found a retailer willing to part with a pair for R4500...
