Part of the Bassman sound is the 10" speakers and a 4 x 10 has as much low end as a 2 x 12 or 1 x 15. But it's a tighter low end, your highs are extended and the overall sound is punchier and more precise. You also get the extra diffusion and coverage of a multi-speaker cab. Dropping down to a 2 x 10 means you get something closer to a 1 x 12 but with a similar precision and punchiness. So if you like the sound of a 4 x 10, you should like a 2 x 10 - you do lose a bit of low end, but the amp has enough to spare.
OK, think I get it.. I played a Blues Deville at one stage with Alnico 4x10s and I just remember it being really, incredibly punchy in the mids but not having a really powerful bass response.
I'm not a fan of 10"......I have an AC10 with original 2x10" Elac alnicos...excellent quality speakers....problem is the lack of punch and bass response (compared to the Celestion 12" alnicos). For a Bassman one needs 12" IMO to get the bottoms also well projected......what you want is a quality sound, irrespective of the volume at which you play. So I say don't go 10"s unless you go 4X10.
Forgot to mention....you don't
have to go the alnico route.....the modern Jensen or Celestion
ceramic magnet speakers are great sounding too.
