Considering a 2 x 10" (alnicos) cab for my 68/69 silverface Bassman head... Talk me out of it?
Do it. Allows for a smaller cab, easier to carry and you dont exactly play at stadium volumes ?
The only question to ask is why 10" speakers with a Bassman?
Most definitely. Alnico speakers and bassman = heaven. And ten inch speakers are epic.

Well I'm asking why not? ?

I guess GFSA is not a good place for "talk me out of it" questions! ?

            No...PLEASE don't do it !....Get 12" 's ! ?
              Aren't bassmen traditionally 410?

Yeah, but I'm just wondering why that would be the choice. 12" are much easier to source and should sound fatter..
Part of the Bassman sound is the 10" speakers and a 4 x 10 has as much low end as a 2 x 12 or 1 x 15. But it's a tighter low end, your highs are extended and the overall sound is punchier and more precise. You also get the extra diffusion and coverage of a multi-speaker cab. Dropping down to a 2 x 10 means you get something closer to a 1 x 12 but with a similar precision and punchiness. So if you like the sound of a 4 x 10, you should like a 2 x 10 - you do lose a bit of low end, but the amp has enough to spare.

OK, think I get it.. I played a Blues Deville at one stage with Alnico 4x10s and I just remember it being really, incredibly punchy in the mids but not having a really powerful bass response.
Perhaps I should have said "All else being equal". The DeVille is a Tweed amp, with the characteristic mid push of those amps. Also, the character of the individual speakers will make a difference (alnico FTW IMO).

I'm not a fan of 10"......I have an AC10 with original 2x10" Elac alnicos...excellent quality speakers....problem is the lack of punch and bass response (compared to the Celestion 12" alnicos). For a Bassman one needs 12" IMO to get the bottoms also well projected......what you want is a quality sound, irrespective of the volume at which you play. So I say don't go 10"s unless you go 4X10.
Forgot to mention....you don't have to go the alnico route.....the modern Jensen or Celestion ceramic magnet speakers are great sounding too.
As the bassman is very Marshally, why not go 2x12 with Vintage 30's? Should be fun and have enough bottom end.

                              Correction ?

I thought I might get corrected on that one ?
