iRig and iPad feedback when playing through headphones

Hey,

I got myself the iRig so that I can play through my iPad. But when I plug it in and play through my headphones with a distortion effect, I get really bad feedback through my headphones. I read somewhere that if you use a headphone jack to RCA cable, it takes away the feedback. A RCA cable will need to be plugged into some speakers. But then what is the point because you want to be able to take your iPad and guitar anywhere and play through headphones.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

I bought the irig for the same purpose, got the same results. I have never tried it again. ☹

Are you using garage band? I know that when you configure the input on garage band there is a noise gate which quitens things down.

I've got GarageBand and AmpliTube installed. The feedback is much worse in GarageBand than what it is in AmpliTube for some reason. But if I switch on the noise gate to eliminate the feedback and I strum the guitar, it rings for two seconds. Eish. I miss my POD XT Live pedal I had years ago which sounded AWESOME through headphones.

The surest solution is to get a device that plugs into the 30 pin jack. I have guitarjack - no feedback. But it's expensive. The company behind ampkit is bringing out their own 30pin connector which promises to be significantly less expensive.

Sharonzaz swears by the ones he makes up that have an active circuit to eliminate some of the feedback. Chat to him. Wizard bought from him and is very satisfied.

I dont claim to know these Ipaddy devices, but it would seem to me that it may be picking up an external/internal mic.

From what I read that one can use your earphones as a low quality Mic, that is with the ones that have longer audio jacks aparently the newer ones are shorter ....your Ipad may be getting feedback this way.

There is also a "No feedback" software switch

I was also thinking along those lines... Maybe the mic and the line in are both active?

Mmmm. That's interesting. I'll have a look tonight. Maybe I need to "de-activate" the iPad's mic or something.

Apparently this is simply a feature of using the headphone input. Something called "cross-talk." I don't know how it works, but the ipad/iphone/ipod microphone is not the issue, apparently.

I bought my iRig 2 days ago (Just got it. Sorry won't be selling) from Bid or Buy. Really great service and got it the next day.

It was R199 and R53 delivery in Johannesburg.

Most problem go away simply with lowering the volume to about half or so using the volume buttons. Some apps like ampkit have
A feature allowing the software to monitor the signal and adjust your volume automatically.

I saw yesterday in a shop the line6 unit that plugs into the
30 pin plug, man at R1300 Im not sure it's worth it.
My units are identical to the irig so if you're having
Problems the worse case is u got a faulty unit (I never saw one before) and u should get it replaced for free.

All those units become a little more sensative using
Phones so try really going as low as possible volume
Wise and perhaps get other phones with a different resistance specs.
Also if you're plugging a mono plug into the stereo output you'll
need to pull it out slightly in order not to get both sides sending
a signal into a single mono cable.

Some reading on the net got me believing one can
get the camera adapter with the USB input
(sells for about 200) and attach some USB sound cards
that work without drivers on osx to the iPad or iPhone
and then you can use the sound card as if it was on a Mac
which means audio and midi in and out.

Some reads claim its the same structure as the alesis IO
the only drawback is no charging the device.
I'm willing to bet that cutting and connecting
Two 30pin cables, and patching in the actual USB
Charger would do the trick and then you practically have
An identical unit to the alesis.
