Elixir strings in Jo'burg???

OK... word from the agent is that there will be strings arriving (in CT) "in the next week". No word on when they will arrive in Jo'burg.

When Andy McGibbon had the distributorship I never had any problems with the supply of Elixir strings. I use Elixir strings exclusively on my basses and eventually contacted Elixir about the supply problems due to the new distributor. I was rather surprised when I received a phone call from the U.K. regarding this problem and was promised that they will resolve the issue with the local distributor. It seems that nothing has transpired as the story at every retail remains the same - "We are waiting for the distributor....". It might be a good idea that everybody who needs strings contact Elixir direct and expose the problem. In the meantime order strings directly from an online retailer. The only issue is to order a number of sets to spread the cost of postage. That's waht I have been doing and believe me, although there is a lump sum payment it still works out cheaper than buying locally. ( And by the way, that applies to most of the musical products we require.)

There was a flurry of activity a couple of months ago and I got an email from Elixir saying that they'd been in contact with the local distributors and that things would improve.

They haven't. Once again (or still) there's a supply problem. >☹

Yeah, I was at Music Connection last week, every gauge except 11's. Forced to choose, I took the 10's. Felt like a wimp :-[ I'm thinking now I should really have taken the 12's to try them out.

This was for your electric? They were apologising to me last weekend that they hadn't any 12s for acoustics (PB or 80:20).

at this moment, i would say: screw the local dealers, import!
Or buy in bulk like Aubs does!

Or better, buy in bulk, imported from the states! at least then you'll have strings!

Well there are options - and I'm in the UK soon and might be able to buy a box to bring back with me (though, in my experience, music shops in the UK are not quite as fabulous as we tend to think they are).

But the first prize, the win-win situation, is for there to be a regular supply in the shops in this country.

I've written to Elixir about this. They passed the message on (eventually!) to the distributors in SA who promised that things would get better - but nothing's changed.

As a paying customer, you're entitled to decent service.

MC told me they got some 12 polywebs in because they got enquiries. Polywebs are the original Elixir strings, with a much thicker coating than the nanowebs. They don't usually stock polyweb, but a customer was looking for them so they got in a small quantity. Nanowebs (thinner coating) are more popular and they've been out of those for a while. They had a couple of packets of 80:20 Polywebs in stock. They hope to get nanowebs on Friday.

Probably a misunderstanding between myself and the guy helping me. I only use the nano's, maybe the 12's the guy was offering me was poly's, (I did not actually see the package) but the 10's I got were nano's. I'm going to have to consider buying in bulk, but it's quite a bit of cash to lay down, it would be cheaper in the long run, and I'd avoid the nuisance factor.

The plot thickens! I had to drop the Morgan off with Mando at Music Connection on the weekend. Of course to do a good job he needs new strings on the guitar. And there aren't any (I'd been told that MC would have stock by the weekend, but it didn't materialise). So I left the guitar with Mando. I had some shopping to do in various parts of Jo'burg so I decided to pop in on any other music shops I saw.

So I ended up in Music Company in Melville. They had stock. I asked if they were having trouble getting stock, and they said no, they've heard some shops are having problems but they don't.

OK... maybe he's trying to woo a customer away from another store. Who knows? And that shop certainly doesn't do the volume of business that Music Connection does. Anyhoo... I bought two packets, drove back to Music Connection and gave Mando a set for use on my guitar. I'll keep an eye on this store.

Sound Select the shop, in the Stoneridge Shopping Centre across from Greenstone has stock too...

Not sure of what, but i saw poly and nanoweb strings...

And im quite sure i saw stock in Lovemore Music in Boksburg too!
