  • The Eagles at Sun City Super Bowl....Sat April 7th

So some friends got tickets and invited Leani and I to the concert ......

Sound ....... 9/10
The Super Bowl was filled about 75% ...... dead crowd (80% over 60s) unless they were playing the big hits. Like my friend said: The concert was ok once we got passed the "cowboy songs", and I agree.

Their big hits got the crowds to their feet ....... overall (after seeing Sting a few weeks back) not a too bad concert.

This is where we were:

Tim Smith, Glenn Fry, Don Henley and Joe Walsh:

I don't need to tell you which songs' solo was being played here:..... Excellent, note for note .....!!!

I saw them in Cape Town.

Was amazed to observe a few things I hadn't realized before; i.e.

    - Frey is an amazing frontman. What incredible presence and banter. His one-liners and song intros were IMO spectacular. I also didn't realise he can play some solid lead guitar.

    - how in the post Hell Freezes Over era the Henley / Frey power struggle seems to have mellowed. I literally took a double take when Tim Schmidt introduced Glen as 'Our Fearless Leader'. I thought Henley claimed that. But then for Frey to introduce Henley as 'the best singer-songwriter I have ever had the pleasure to work with, and my friend since 1971' - I thought 'hell has really frozen over.

    - just reinforcing how different Joe Walsh is in that band. An incredibly intuitive player with charisma to spare. He was larger than life in Cape Town.

Some surprising inclusions and exclusions from the set. No Tequila Sunrise, One of these nights, new kid in town et al. A lot of heavier songs and the entire Walsh cannon. I loved it, but I got the impression that the majority of the Cape Town seniors crowd didn't like what I heard one of them describe as these 'new' (lol) songs.

Really thought they are still really good, and didn't come across as a tribute act. Still seemed vital and worth the price of admission for more than just a memory.
