Hmmm... what a crappy decision

Well, as I'm still writing choons for this trio in a sleaze orientated fashion I thought things were going rosy. Now, after having watched Patlansky at his album launch... my vocalist/bassist reckons we must now write some blues things like him... instead of what we're doing. What makes it worse is he thinks Dan has revolutionised blues and blah blah blah. Farking groupies, pffft. Now from the early days of knowing Dan, he was more a traditionalist in the sense of Stevie Ray Vaughan/ Hendrix. I can accept that. However, as of this moment... it is all Joe Bonamassa. And I frikkin hate Joe Bone. Too much wankage and not enough melody to carry the song. At least thats the way I see it... His Bloodline thing was awesome. Enough said about that album. I'm not here to dis Dan, because he is jamming out there whereas I'm not... yet. But I didn't enjoy the show because of his excessive wanking that did NOT contribute to the song. Yeah, its about a live thing in the end and showmanship and all that blessed stuff, which was cool and I could understand the audience perspective.... but it's not how I treat songs. So to be asked to scrap all my material in favour of "new blues choons done the Dan way" kinda grates my nuts a bit. The deafening silent pause as I said "Cool, you wanna do that, we can do that. But I will be advertising for a new vocalist for the other stuff because I have waited too f***ing long to get this stuff out there".... priceless. But.. what would you guys do?

The last time I heard Dan, he sounded and played exactly like SRV, who in turn "borrowed" a lot from Hendrix. So not much originality there, but Dan always did what he did extremely well. However, long long ago he came an jammed with the Dogs one night. The bluesy stuff was killer, but when we wacked a Van Halen tune, he was nowhere. Different strokes for different folks I guess. He is still a great player though.

Eddie Van Halen sounds like no one else and no one else sounds like him so he get's my thumbs up as a "good guitarist"

True originality is far rarer than most people realise and way overrated (this coming from someone who refused to learn or play other people's music for two decades - all it did was hold me back). See the web series Everything is a Remix for details. IMO it's a must see for anyone in music.

Advances/changes in anything come from building on what has come before. We learn by imitation and advance further by "remixing" a variety of source influences.

So if a painter paints a half-arsed version of the Mona Lisa it's all good, and then another one comes along and paint's a version of the half-arsed version and so on and so on.

Music like painting or pretty much everything else is a craft, but we don't all have to paint landscapes the same way the whole time using the same oil based paints and the same techniques.

There is no such thing as true originality, as human beings we are all the same yet AS human beings we're all distinct, if I started dressing and talking and walking and thinking and acting like Bruce Willis what does that make me, NOT me, just some Bruce Willis wannabe............(why anybody would want to be a Bruce Willis wannabe I don't know, just using it as an example), it's kind of the same thing with music, music is music but you can go about it in your own little unique way without ripping off some other guys "voice" and "style".

i have the same problem with dan's shows lately.

a couple of years back dan's shows used to be attended by a handful of people - his dad, me & a buddy, & a random drunk (there always seemed to be a random drunk no matter where it was....) i can remember going to the radium for a show of his & there were only 4 people in the whole place..

i loved it, he was totally into the music, completely oblivious to the audience - what there was - & doing his normal thing of screwing his face up & pulling funny moves. it was all about the melody & immersion in the music. i used to come away from his shows feeling so good...

now - not the same...... just seems to me that he focuses too much on the flashy aspects. i just don't feel the same involvement on the same core, fundamental emotional level that i used to...

so - yeah i'm happy for him that he's popular, & i will still go to see his shows - but only if it's convenient. i will not go out of my way like i used to.....

Exactly, you CAN'T reinvent anything, stuff tastes good in certain combos and it's just how you combine that makes you YOU as a chef or whatever.

Often audiences get lots of flash because they demand flash.

I remember going to one of Tony Cox's international Guitar Night shows. He headliner (not Andrea Valeri, the guy who came out the year before) was clearly testing the water early on in his set. He tried a few things, including a gorgeous, slow instrumental piece that was all melody and no solo, but the audience whooped and hollered when he gave them the bling and so that's the way he steered his set from them on.

Plus there's always a bit more and a bit longer soloing when a guy is up on stage with a band pumping behind him and the audience egging him on. Richard "I play strictly for the song" Thompson gets pretty carried away sometimes and has been known to hit the 15 minute mark. On the studio records the solos are more to the point and mostly are to do with serving the song, but on stage he stretches out a lot more.

But seriously.. I've thought long and hard about this guy over the while that I've known about him. And sure, to judge him on a skill level, I don't actually have a square mm of earth to stand on, he's frikken amazing! Absolute wizard in fact. But, he's a musician/artist. And to judge him on that level.. I think he's a bit of a poser ? Originality is one thing, and that's already been taken to ground. But I just feel that its talent wasted..

On a similar note, these guys really need to stop destroying Hendrix.. ?

Evo, follow your heart man. Only take people along who really want to be on that road with you.....players who want to drive part of the way and not just sit in the back, along for the ride. These guys will bale at the first sign of it not happening soon enough for them......or if something more developed comes along. If they cannot share your vision, 86 them.

Anyone with half a bag of talent can play covers or copy someone else. I'd say see your original songs through brother.

By the time you work up a whole bunch of Patlansky sounding stuff anyway......things have moved on and there is a whole new flavor everyone is jumping up and down over, like a pack of fucking Jack Russell terriers at a window with a cat sitting behind it. Boing-Ruff, Boing-RuffRuff, Boing-Ruff. You want to try be ahead of the curve bro', not coming up in the rear picking up on the left behind scraps.

I'd say talk to your bassist/singer....take him to StarBucks or somewhere and try have a heart to heart with him about the direction of the band......find out if he is with you or not. I mean....he's either with you........or he's not with you. Right?

Same with you too though.....you have to be 110% behind your own music so you can "sell it" to the band.

I always love how if you're a south african and you talk shit about Yngwie Malmsteen or John Patrucci or you think Paul Gilbert is overrated it's no problem, just an opinion, but if you're a south african and you talk "kak" about some other south african musician, holy-shit, then it's a big deal and "YOU suck because you're not the one playing at tanz cafe".

If you think Dan Patlansky sucks and you can barely strum a chord then your opinion is no less valued. When you go to a crappy restaurant and eat the worst plate of food ever you're not allowed to complain about it because you're not a chef and you can't cook.

Dan Patlansky is an awesome player and a helluva nice guy. It's a pleasure to be able to watch him live in SA, and although I don't find him the most original act around, he's very entertaining to watch.

John Mayer is one of my favourite players: amazing tone, able to play a lot of different stuff and a great singer as well. Some of his songs are big favourites of mine.

Why choose one or the other? Why even bother. Honestly, it's all just daft to me. Listen to both, or none, or whatever.
