Ok, but what if the best guitar you can afford at the time is either a top of the range LTD, or a bottom grade ESP? (or exchange it for any other brand, Fender/Squier, PRS/PRS SE etc.)

my opnion is always buy the lower of the top range than top of the lower range. This is an economic principle i try an live by.
Do you buy with intent to sell or keep for along time? I think that makes quite a difference.
Well resale is sometimes a factor but not always so. And yes there are always exceptions but generally this is something i try and live by as it results in the most utility or value FOR ME. YMMV. the R&D in higher qulaity brands is superior to lower quality (even if high end) , the warranties are generally better , the perceived value is higher and lets face it chicks prefer an oke driving a porsche than a lexus ...facetious yes but perceived value is very NB in todays world. I am in the negotiation game and ppl place "value" on items. whether we like it or not this is a fact of life.
