I've seen a Digidesign DIGI 002 Rack going for what I think is a decent price (R5K) and wondered if it is worth it. Anyone know of any reason that it wouldn't be a good interface to get? I see ProTools is coming out with V8 soon (although Digi say it will be compatible with ALL Digi hardware), but I also want to know if there is any reason that would make it a bad choice - like incompatible with newer computers or something (I know it's Firewire, but am using that for an example).

Hey Alan, we use 002's in our studio, they're really great. If u can get it for 5k it's an absolute steal!!! Seriously jump at that!!!
Haven't had any problems and u can also extend it to 16 channels, we record 16 channels live at our multi camera events straight into protools, really cool to work with..
Hope that helps

Ah! Good to hear. Now I've just got to decide if I want to make the switch to Protools.

What you need to ask yourself is can you, or will you ever use those extra channels, maybe you will when you mike up a drum kit?

If u don't take it Alan, i will... Seriously.. We'd use it here, so please get back to me on this
Thanks

For 5k it's definitely worth it ?
Especially now that Pro Tools 8 has more simultaneous channels compared the the previous version with only 32.
As an interface I think the Presonus Firestudio, is better as the Digi 002 only has 4 mic Preamps on the 8 inputs where the Presonus has 8 Class A preamps.
But the advantage of having Pro Tools-only plugs (Beat detective and elastic audio) is worth it enough for me to get an Mbox just for mixing purposes.
But for 5k? If there's nothing wrong with it I'd buy the 002. ?

OK. I'm going to see if I can make it happen. One of my ESIs lost an o/p channel recently, so it's been preying on my mind and I want something good and rack-mounted.
Strangely enough, I don't know PT very well so I'm gonna have to go through the learning curve thing again... OH well at least most of the plugs and synths I use come with RTAs versions too.

Pro Tools is VERY easy to use!! And what makes it great is that VERSION 8 is coming!! yeah! ?
A 002 rack is very cool. And getting it clocked to something is quite easy. Just a pity it didnt come out with wordclock like the 003 did.
And just the basic RTAS plug ins are very cool. And there are Freeware plug ins from 'pluggo' which are amazing!

8) Cool! Thanks to everyone for all your responses. Sorry Teleplayer!
Quite honestly, even if I don't take to ProTools, the interface itself is worth it and basically has all the features I want and more. The seller is throwing in a decent Firewire card too (my mobo doesn't have FW).
I mostly use the Waves plugs and NI softsynths, all of which come with RTAS versions, so I'm cool there.
As an aside, my wife has announced she's buying it for me as an anniversary prezzie (12 years at the end of this month!). She's a keeper, even if the interface turns out not to be. ?

I lost out on this. Was going to collect it today, but the guy has changed his mind because the replacement he was going to get has jumped in price thanks to the Rand.
So if anyone knows or hears of a good quality rackmount interface going secondhand, please let me know.

Still waiting 4 a response from Dean on this one ?

Thanks Gareth!!

Aah I know the feeling!
I was in the middle of buying an origional '5150 mk I' head which is unfortunately discontinued, (with a very convincing price) from a friend because he wanted the head that I have now but the dollar went up too much and he changed his mind halfway through. :/
I don't know of any interface's of that quality 2nd hand unfortunately, especially for 5k. That's why I was shocked at the origional deal.
I was quoted around 6.5k for the Presonus unit first hand though and it is my next purchase when I get back.
For engineering I wouldn't move to Pro-Tools unless it's an HD system because I'm as familiar with Cubase as if I designed the program myself lol. Mixing on PT is a different story though ?
If I do come across one I'll let you know, fo sho 8)

Thanks Dean. I know it was a good deal. ☹ Oh well, c'est la vie!
I can pick up a demo model of an Edirol DA-2496 for R5K, which seems decent. I'm worried about lifespan though, since they have been out of production for a while already and this one has been used in a shop for ages... don't want to get caught needing drivers to run on a newer OS in a year or two...
The Firestudio (specifically the Project version) looks like a likely candidate - I'll email Tuerk and see if they are available and what kind of price I can get.
Otherwise, I may just have to hold on a bit and get a M-Audio Delta 1010 - they seem a bit overpriced though. Any idea of the quality difference between the two (aside from feature differences like the mic preamps)?
